A woman has been charged and detained in connection with the audacious $102 million jewel heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The 38-year-old appeared in court Saturday visibly distressed, expressing fears for her children and her own safety.
The arrest and charging of the woman, a resident of La Courneuve, a northern suburb of Paris, marks a significant development in the investigation of the brazen robbery that occurred last month.Authorities allege she was complicit in organized theft and criminal conspiracy related to the crime. A magistrate ordered her held in custody, citing concerns about potential collusion with others and the possibility of public disorder.
Police confirmed that two of the five individuals arrested this week have now been formally charged. The remaining three have been released pending further investigation.
The louvre, the world’s most visited art museum, was targeted by thieves who used power tools during a daylight raid, successfully stealing jewelry in approximately seven minutes. The value of the stolen items is estimated at US$102 million.
