2024 Winter Vaccination Campaign: Priority Groups Urged to Receive Influenza and COVID-19 Doses at Vaccination Centers

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 8, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Priority groups to receive doses against influenza and COVID-19 must approach or be taken to the vaccination centers enabled within the 2024 winter vaccination campaign, which aims to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with the virus, especially among groups of risks.

The ideal is for each family to approach its members who are within the prioritized group to be immunized during the campaign that has already begun and who are protected against circulating respiratory viruses.

The prevention of complications and hospitalizations due to respiratory diseases is possible with the application of the influenza and COVID-19 vaccine to people over 60 years of age and older, the Paraguayan Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology recommends.

“We have to prevent respiratory diseases in our elderly people and avoid complications and hospitalization. Let’s take advantage of the availability of vaccines, this will help a lot to prevent complications and hospitalizations,” said Dr. Mercedes Duarte, president of the Paraguayan Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

During the influenza vaccination campaign in 2024, quadrivalent inactivated vaccines will be administered. In addition to people over 60 years of age and older, the priority group includes: health workers, pregnant women in any trimester of pregnancy, postpartum women, children from 6 to 35 months of age (2 doses will be administered in the case of primary vaccination), cohabitants with premature newborns, cohabitants with immunocompromised.

Also people from 3 to 59 years old with risk factors (obesity, diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, neurological, rheumatological, autoimmune diseases, or under immunosuppressive treatment, congenital or acquired immunodeficiencies, cancer, and patients transplanted), population deprived of their liberty, indigenous population.

In addition, for the 2024 winter campaign, doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from the Moderna laboratory are available, with the updated composition. The vaccination schedule against COVID-19 will include: two doses for boys and girls from 6 months to 4 years (without a history of vaccination) with an interval of 8 weeks between doses, one dose for the population 5 years and older.

The prioritized groups for vaccination against COVID-19 also include immunocompromised people or people with chronic diseases, people over 6 months of age, health personnel and pregnant women from 20 weeks of gestation.

Both vaccines, against influenza and COVID-19, will be available at vaccination centers and can be administered simultaneously.

Being an organ donor transforms the hope of many people into a reality

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 8, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The number 271 is not just numbers, it is children and adults, men and women of Paraguay for whom an organ and tissue transplant is the only opportunity to continue living or to improve the quality of their existence.

Any person over 18 years of age is considered an organ and tissue donor, unless they have stated otherwise before the INAT.

Organ donation is an act of generosity and altruism, a gift of life for people on the transplant waiting list.

The National Institute of Ablation and Transplantation (INAT), dependent on the Ministry of Public Health, registers 271 patients on the waiting list, of which 168 correspond to corneas, 91 to kidneys, 5 to hearts and 7 to livers. Likewise, it registers 177 people transplanted so far this year.

In the country, according to “Anita Law” 6170/18, every person over 18 years of age is considered an organ donor after death. If someone does not wish to donate, they must express this in writing to INAT.

It is important to mention that you can express your desire to be a donor by registering the data in the form enabled via the INAT website, in the following link https://inat.mspbs.gov.py/

Any person alive, or after death due to brain death, regardless of age or sex, can be an organ and tissue donor, in the case of minors under 18 years of age, with the express authorization of their parents or legal guardians.

Being a donor makes it possible, given the necessary clinical conditions, to perform the ablation and subsequent transplant of two kidneys, liver, heart, two lungs and the pancreas. As for the tissues, both corneas, the skin and the bones can give way.

During life you can donate a kidney, a part of the liver, as well as bone marrow, as long as you are related. Women who give birth in scheduled deliveries can also donate placenta, which is used in patients who suffered burns.

It is worth mentioning that the INAT provides immunosuppressive (anti-rejection) medications free of charge and for life, whose investment ranges from G. 8,000,000 to 10,000,000 per month per transplanted and non-transplanted patient.

In the last week, an 8% decrease in the demand for consultations due to influenza-type illness was reported. SARS-CoV2 is the predominant virus at the moment. The application of the annual vaccine protects against severe forms of the disease, available in the country’s vaccination centers.

In the last week (SE) 46, consultations for influenza-type illness (ILI) have registered a decrease of 8%, compared to the previous week, going from 20,695 to 19,017, from one week to the next, indicates the weekly report of Universal country surveillance. However, the trend curve remains above the alert threshold.

In this same period, 252 people were hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), presenting a slight decrease in new hospitalizations of 12%, compared to the previous week. Among those hospitalized, 55% correspond to pediatric age; 55% being children under 2 years old, and 45% adults.

Among the respiratory viruses identified in the last week in patients hospitalized for acute respiratory infections, a predominance in the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 was identified, followed by rhinovirus, metapneumovirus, parainfluenza and adenovirus.

Having the annual dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is key to reducing the risk of hospitalizations and associated deaths. Citizens, mainly priority groups, are urged to apply their annual dose of protection.

Thus, it is also important to keep children’s regular vaccination schedule up to date, especially those under 5 years of age.

If you have respiratory symptoms

Importance of Annual Vaccination: Decrease in Influenza Illness and Hospitalizations

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 20, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Patient demand for influenza-type illness decreased 11% in the last week, but viruses continue to circulate, which is why the health ministry insists on the importance of annual vaccination against COVID-19 and influenza.

Sentinel Surveillance shows that in the last week (SE) 44, consultations for influenza-type illness (ILI) at the country level have registered a decrease of 11%, in relation to the previous week, going from 21,080 to 18,762, between a week and another. Despite this decrease, the trend curve continues to exceed the alert threshold.

Regarding those hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), a slight decrease in new hospitalizations was observed in the sentinel centers. In this last week, 258 hospitalizations for SARI were recorded, 54 less than the previous week, of which 57% correspond to pediatric age, 48% being children under 2 years of age, which is the most affected group, and 43 % of adulthood. Despite this decrease, the number of hospitalized people is above what was recorded the previous year at this same time.

Among the respiratory viruses identified in the last week in patients hospitalized for acute respiratory infections, the circulation of SARS-CoV2 predominates, followed by Rhinovirus, Metapneumovirus, Parainfluenza and Adenovirus.

Annual vaccination is important

Having the annual dose of the influenza and COVID-19 vaccine is key to reducing the risk of hospitalizations and deaths associated with these diseases that circulate all year round.

Citizens, mainly priority groups, are urged to apply their annual dose of protection.

It is also important to keep children’s regular vaccination schedule up to date, especially those under 5 years of age.
