(CNN)– A senior White House official said the United States believes Iran is preparing “to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel.”
The official said in a statement on Tuesday, “The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. We are actively supporting defensive preparations to protect Israel the -against this attack.
The official warned that “any direct military attack by Iran against Israel would have serious consequences for Iran. “
A US official told CNN The United States expects that the next attack by Iran against Israel will be similar to the attack that happened last April, after the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which led to the killing of members of the Revolutionary Guard out of Iran.
Iran has also promised to respond to Israel since the former head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran last July.
