New Law Targets Onlineโฃ Gambling, Protecting Youth and Preventing Financial โฃRuin: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently defended the newly enactedโข Promotion and Regulationโ of Online Gaming Act, 2025, emphasizing theโฃ governmentSโข commitmentโค toโข safeguarding โthe nation’s youth and addressing the detrimental โeffects of online โgambling. While acknowledgingโ that gaming itself isn’t inherently negative, the Prime โMinisterโฃ highlighted theโข dangers of online games โthat โคincorporate gambling elements, citing instancesโ of debt andโค even suicide โคlinked toโฃ these platforms.
During an interaction with โteachers in โNew Delhi,Modi explained the law โคwasโ a “major decision” โprompted by the negative influence โof certain online games on students and the devastating financial consequences experienced by families. He noted โthatโ many applications marketed โฃas games are, in reality, โvehicles for gambling.
The Act, passed by bothโ houses of Parliament โlast month andโค spearheaded by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, specifically bansโฃ all formsโ of online money gamesโ – those requiring monetary deposits with the expectation ofโข financial rewards. It aims to differentiate between harmfulโฃ gambling โand legitimate activities like esports and social gaming,โค fostering growth in those areas.
The legislation โalso prohibits advertising for online money games and prevents financial institutions from processing transactions related to them. Violators โคfaceโ penalties of up to three years โขimprisonment orโข a fine of โน1 crore.
PM โคModi underscored theโฃ government’sโ “political will” in enacting the law,โ driven by a concern for โthe country’s future. The Center is expected to โขrelease theโฃ rules and FAQs for โคthe Act within theโ nextโข three to four weeks, following initial consultations with industry representatives led by Minister Vaishnaw.
