Cricket’s Olympic Comeback: LA 2028 Dates Announced!
Get ready for the roar of the crowd! The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially confirmed that cricket will make its triumphant return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028. Matches are set to commence on July 12, 2028, with the men’s and women’s finals scheduled for July 20th and 29th, respectively.
This marks cricket’s first Olympic appearance since the Paris Games in 1900. the exciting Twenty20 format will feature six teams for both men and women, aiming to captivate the sport’s massive global fanbase, estimated at 2.5 billion people. The IOC’s decision in October 2023 highlighted cricket’s potential to engage new audiences.
All thrilling matches will unfold at a specially constructed temporary venue at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, a short drive from downtown Los Angeles. Each tournament will see six teams compete, with 90 athlete quotas allocated per gender, allowing for 15-player squads.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has been actively advocating for Caribbean nations to have a clear pathway to qualification, emphasizing their rich olympic legacy and the importance of ensuring their cricketers aren’t excluded from this historic event. CWI CEO Chris Dehring stated, “All we are asking is that our individual nations’ exceptional Olympic legacy be considered in the conversation… we must ensure that our cricketers are not shut out of history. We are ready to collaborate.We are ready to compete.But above all, we are asking for fairness.”
