The most interesting sophomores to watch for the 2025-26 NBA season

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor July 31, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Houston Rockets backcourt Opens Door for Rookie Sheppard

the Houston Rockets’ recent trade activity has created a meaningful chance for rookie guard Cam Whitmore, clearing substantial minutes in the backcourt. whitmore is now projected to play a key role, serving as a backup to established guards Fred VanVleet and Amen Thompson. the teamS aspirations for true contention may hinge more on the development of its young core-Whitmore,Thompson,and Jabari Smith jr.-than on any potential acquisition like Kevin Durant.

Despite a less-than-stellar summer league performance,Whitmore warrants optimism. He is expected to step into an ideal situation as a secondary ball-handler, playmaker, and floor spacer. His ability to complement Houston’s star players, both by operating off them and by creating easier opportunities, will be crucial. whitmore’s shooting will be particularly vital when sharing the floor with Thompson and Alperen Sengun. However, his defensive effectiveness will also be tested, as the rockets may concede perimeter size when VanVleet and Whitmore are on the court together. While Whitmore’s instincts for securing possessions are beneficial on the defensive end, he is not currently considered a primary deterrent against opposing shooters.

Lowered Cap Increase Could Lead To Heightened Draft Pick Value In 2026

by Priya Shah – Business Editor July 26, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

NBA Teams Face Strategic Decisions Amidst cap Constraints and Trade Opportunities

As the NBA salary cap landscape evolves, teams are navigating a complex habitat where strategic asset management and shrewd trading can yield notable advantages. The projected 10% cap increase did not fully materialize, creating tighter financial adaptability for many franchises. This situation presents a unique prospect for teams with ample cap space and draft capital to acquire valuable assets from those facing immediate financial pressures.

the value of cost-controlled players, particularly those at less glamorous but essential positions, is being re-evaluated. A player providing even backup-level production at a specific spot can represent substantial value, consuming a mere 3% of the salary cap. This highlights that a player’s worth is not solely determined by their proximity to stardom.

This dynamic allows teams with the financial capacity to offer draft picks in exchange for immediate cap relief to negotiate from a position of strength. The argument is straightforward: “With less money available due to the cap not jumping as was to be expected, we can definitely help alleviate your financial burden.” This bargaining tactic offers a genuine benefit to teams operating close to or above the salary cap’s upper limits.

Mid-tier teams positioned to select in the late lottery should actively seek opportunities where expensive franchises are willing to part with future, unprotected draft picks to improve their immediate financial standing. For teams prioritizing cost-controlled talent and nearing the second apron, the leverage to demand unprotected future picks as compensation is substantial. They understand the significant advantage of acquiring affordable production.

The long-term implications of these financial maneuvers are yet to be fully realized. However, franchises that are comfortably below the apron levels and are not under immediate pressure to make significant roster moves could perhaps capitalize significantly on these market conditions in the coming months.

NBA Summer League: Kon Knueppel Leads Charlotte Hornets to Championship

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor July 21, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Kon Knueppel‘s Charlotte Hornets career is off to a promising start.

The no. 4 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft led the Hornets to their first Summer League title, defeating the sacramento Kings 83-78 in the championship game on Sunday.

Knueppel scored a team-high 21 points and sank the decisive 3-pointer in the final minute, securing the victory.

The clutch shot extended the Hornets’ led to four, a margin that proved crucial after the Kings’ Isaac Jones responded with a 3-pointer 10 seconds later.

Sacramento was forced to foul in the closing moments, preventing them from completing what would have been an 18-point comeback.

Knueppel’s performance earned him the Summer League championship game MVP award.

Isaac Jones led the kings with 24 points and 11 rebounds. ryan Kalkbrenner contributed 15 points for the Hornets, while Jaylen Sims,KJ Simpson, and DJ Rodman each added 11 points.

The Hornets established an early double-digit lead but saw the Kings narrow the gap with an 11-2 run to close the second quarter.

Charlotte extended their lead again in the fourth quarter, but a scoring drought allowed the Kings to make the game’s conclusion tense.

The Hornets advanced to the championship game with a 4-0 record in group play and a semifinal victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Sims was a key contributor in the semifinal, while Knueppel played through a head injury that required him to wear a bandage on his forehead during the championship game.

The team’s success was achieved despite injuries to rookies Liam McNeeley and Sion James, who missed games with Achilles tendinitis and a hip injury, respectively.

Knueppel is expected to secure a starting position in the upcoming Hornets training camp.

Ryan Kalkbrenner is also a candidate for critically important playing time following the Hornets’ trade of starting center Mark Williams.

While regular season success may be more challenging, these early performances by the Hornets’ young players are a positive sign for the team.
