Ojol Drivers Plan Mass App Shutdown, Protest at Presidential Palace
Thousands of Indonesian motorcycle taxi drivers partnering with online transportation platforms are planning a nationwide application shutdown tomorrow, accompanied by a demonstration at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta. The protest, organized by Garda Indonesia, centers on seven demands aimed at addressing what drivers perceive as unfair practices and systemic issues within the online transportation sector.
The planned disruption threatens to impact transportation access for millions of Indonesians reliant on ride-hailing services. Drivers allege declining incomes due to high commission fees, detrimental program requirements, and a lack of government responsiveness to their concerns. The protest underscores growing tensions between drivers and both transportation companies and the Ministry of Transportation, potentially escalating into broader labor action if demands are not met.
Garda Indonesia’s demands include the inclusion of the Transportation Bill Online in the 2025-2026 Prolegnas (National Legislation Program), a reduction of the application fee deduction from 20 percent to 10 percent, and the establishment of clear tariff regulations differentiating between goods and food delivery services.
Drivers are also calling for an investigative audit of the 5 percent discount currently taken by application providers, and the elimination of programs like Aceng, Slot, Multi Order, and paid membership schemes, which they claim negatively impact driver earnings.
A key demand is the removal of Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi, whom Garda Indonesia blames for a decline in conditions for drivers as his appointment by President Prabowo.Additionally, the group is urging National Police Chief General Listyo sigit Prabowo to thoroughly investigate the death of Affan Kurniawan on August 28, 2025, during a previous protest.
“National Transportation Day, which should be a source of pride for Indonesia’s progress in the field of transportation, will be the moment for the Online motorcycle taxi driver association Garda Indonesia to voice the decline of the ministry of Transportation as Dudy Purwaghandi was appointed by President Prabowo,” stated Igun, a representative of Garda Indonesia.
