Odisha Girl Burned in Attack Dies; Police Dispute Initial Reports
Tragic incident sparks outrage and political fallout as authorities claim no outside involvement.
A 15-year-old girl, who suffered extensive burns after allegedly being set ablaze by assailants in Odisha’s Puri district, has succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS in New Delhi. The death comes amid conflicting statements from the state police regarding the circumstances of the attack.
Death Follows National Outcry
The victim, who sustained over 75% burns, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2025. The Odisha Crime Branch had taken over the investigation into the incident, which occurred on July 19 under the Balanga police station limits. This case drew widespread condemnation, echoing concerns raised by the recent self-immolation of a college student in Balasore.
The state government, led by Chief Minister **Mohan Majhi**, faced renewed pressure from opposition parties demanding enhanced safety measures for women. The incident has amplified calls for accountability and better protection across the state.
Police Statement Contradicts Earlier Accounts
Hours after the girl’s death, Odisha Police released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) asserting that their investigation indicated “no other person” was involved in the incident. This contradicts earlier reports suggesting the girl was waylaid and attacked by three unidentified individuals.
We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of the victim girl. The police have conducted the investigation with utmost sincerity. The investigation has reached its final stage. According to the investigation conducted so far, it is clear that no other person is involved. Therefore, we request everyone not to make any sensitive comments regarding this matter during this tragic moment.

Despite her critical condition, the girl was reportedly able to provide statements to investigators at both AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, and AIIMS, New Delhi, before her passing. Authorities expect a detailed probe report to be released soon.
Condolences and Demands for Justice
Chief Minister **Mohan Majhi** expressed his deep sorrow, acknowledging the government’s efforts and the medical team’s dedication. “I am deeply shocked to learn of the girlโs death. I pray for the eternal peace of her soul,” he stated.
Former Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader **Naveen Patnaik** offered his condolences, praying for strength for the grieving family. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president **Bhakta Charan Das** voiced his heartbreak and demanded stringent action and justice for the victim.
The BJD has called for a compensation of โน2 crore for the girl’s next of kin and insisted on the arrest of the three alleged perpetrators, despite the police’s statement. Security has been heightened around the residences of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers.
Escalating Safety Concerns
The incident comes at a time when public discourse on women’s safety in Odisha is particularly heightened. In 2023, India reported over 31,000 cases of crimes against women, with states facing increased scrutiny to address these issues (NCRB, 2023).
