‘Strung along’ Reds to ‘revert’ to £47.2m duo in bid for sixth summer signing

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor July 12, 2025

Liverpool Eye Defensive Alternatives Amid **Guehi** Uncertainty

As **Liverpool** reshapes its defense under new leadership, the club is reportedly considering alternatives to **Marc Guehi**, with concerns rising that Crystal Palace may be playing hardball over the England international’s transfer fee.

Potential Defensive Reinforcements

**Richard Hughes**, the sporting director, has already been active this summer, securing the signatures of several players. However, bolstering the central defense remains a priority following **Jarell Quansah**’s move to Bayer Leverkusen for approximately £35m. The future of **Ibrahima Konate** is also uncertain, as he has allegedly turned down two contract extension offers amid interest from Real Madrid, who have supposedly bid £43m.

While **Guehi** is manager Slot’s preferred choice, **Liverpool** is hesitant to meet Palace’s £50m valuation, deeming it too high for a player with only one year left on his contract. Despite **Guehi**’s interest in joining **Liverpool**, he is also prepared to see out his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer.

Exploring Other Options

According to journalist **David Lynch**, **Liverpool** may shift focus to players aligning more closely with their initial criteria for the position. “As of last week, there had been no firm approach to Crystal Palace, with outline contact limited to the players’ representatives in an attempt to sell the move,” **Lynch** wrote.

Should **Liverpool** suspect they are being strung along by Crystal Palace, they are expected to pursue alternative targets. The club’s desire is to bring in a young centre-back with significant growth potential.

Targets on the Radar

**Giovanni Leoni** of Parma and **Konstantinos Koulierakis** of Wolfsburg are reportedly being monitored. The 18-year-old **Leoni** made 17 appearances for Parma last season and is valued at £15.6m, while the 21-year-old **Koulierakis** played 30 times for Wolfsburg and is valued at £21.6m. Interestingly, senior figures at Anfield may consider deviating from their preferred profile if a significant opportunity arises in the market.

As **Liverpool** navigates the transfer window, their strategic approach to defensive reinforcements will be crucial. According to a recent report, the average age of center backs signed by Premier League clubs is 24.6 years old, highlighting the league’s emphasis on youth and potential (Transfermarkt 2024).

Crystal Palace impacted as Lyon relegated to Ligue 2 over financial issues

Lyon Faces Ligue 2 Demotion After Financial Setback

Europa League Hopes Uncertain Amidst Financial Turmoil

French football is rocked by news that Lyon is facing relegation to Ligue 2. This follows the club’s failure to satisfy financial regulations set by the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG), potentially impacting their European ambitions.

DNCG Decision and Textor’s Response

The DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog, has demoted Lyon to Ligue 2. John Textor, the club owner, attended a hearing and shared a positive outlook.

“You can see from the contributions of our shareholders, we have invested new capital, not only for the DNCG, but also for our UEFA licensing process,”

—John Textor

Despite these assertions, the DNCG decided Lyon had not met the required financial standards for Ligue 1. The club now has a week to appeal, possibly delaying the final decision. The French professional football league (LFP) regulations stipulate that if a club is denied entry to Ligue 1 due to financial or disciplinary issues, the losing team from the relegation play-off could be reinstated. Recent data from Deloitte shows that over the past decade, more than 10% of European clubs have faced financial penalties (Deloitte 2024).

Europa League Implications

Textor recently made headlines regarding uncertainty surrounding Crystal Palace’s spot in next season’s Europa League. He agreed to sell his 43% stake in the Premier League club to Woody Johnson.

This move aims to resolve a conflict with UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules. Both Lyon and Crystal Palace qualified for the Europa League which creates a conflict with UEFA’s rules.

UEFA regulations demand clubs settle any multi-club ownership issues by March 1, 2025. Selling his Palace stake was a belated attempt by Textor. If Lyon is deemed ineligible, Palace would not face demotion to the Europa Conference League.

Arsenal Poised to Land Star Striker Gyokeres Over Man United

Arsenal Favored to Secure Coveted Striker

A potential transfer saga is unfolding, with Viktor Gyokeres likely choosing Arsenal over Manchester United this summer. The Sporting CP striker, fresh off a prolific season, has captured the attention of multiple top clubs. Recent reports suggest the Gunners are in the lead for his signature.

Gyokeres scored an impressive 43 goals in 50 matches during the 2023/24 season, following up with 54 goals in 52 appearances the next season.

—Fabrizio Romano, Transfer Expert

Arsenal’s potential acquisition of Gyokeres aligns with the team’s need for a dynamic center-forward. Their performance in the Premier League has shown that a strong attacking presence is critical (Premier League Stats). The Gunners have finished second in the league three times in a row.

Red Devils Seek Other Options

The news is a setback for the newly appointed head coach of the Red Devils, Ruben Amorim. He is familiar with Gyokeres from their time together in Lisbon.

Reports indicate that Manchester United may now focus on Hugo Ekitike. Chelsea and Liverpool are also reportedly monitoring this situation.

Gyokeres has an £84 million release clause, though he’s expected to leave for around £65 million.

Atletico Madrid Targets Liverpool’s Andy Robertson

Reports indicate Andy Robertson is a prime transfer target for Atletico Madrid, signaling a potential shift in the Liverpool left-back’s career. This move could reshape both clubs’ defensive strategies as the summer transfer window approaches.

Madrid’s Interest Revealed

According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid has prioritized signing Andy Robertson. The Scottish international is allegedly eager to join the La Liga side. Sources suggest that Diego Simeone wants a new left-back, with Robertson currently higher on their shortlist than Theo Hernandez of AC Milan.

The interest arises as Robertson has only a year left on his contract. Liverpool is also reportedly targeting Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who impressed last season in the Premier League. The demand for top-tier left-backs has increased significantly, reflected in the Premier League, where the average salary for full-backs has risen 15% over the past year (Industry Report 2024).

Robertson’s Perspective

Robertson addressed his future, acknowledging ongoing discussions about a new contract. He emphasized focusing on his family during the upcoming holiday period. He stated that he and the club are in discussions but cannot predict the future.

He also mentioned the importance of the club continuing to improve and identified the anticipation of competition. He acknowledged new players are arriving.

With Robertson potentially moving, and with Kerkez close to joining the Reds, the upcoming transfer window will be a pivotal time for both clubs, especially regarding their defensive strategies.
