Russians who control Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant said today that a Ukrainian drone dropped explosives on a road outside the plant, endangering its personnel who use that road, Russian news agency TASS reported.

Russia took control of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, shortly after launching its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The station is inactive as Moscow and Kiev have repeatedly accused each other of trying to sabotage its operation and endangering the security around it.

The attack comes as Ukraine continues its incursion into Russian territory, claiming to have taken control of 82 settlements in an area of 1,150 square kilometers in the Kursk region since August 6.

Besides, according to the Russian news agency RIA, citing the Russian temporary representative in Vienna, Roman Ustinov, Moscow wants to discuss the attack on the Zaporizhia station with the leadership of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Russia also wants the IAEA to warn Ukraine not to repeat such attacks, Ustinov said.

The plant’s six inactive reactors, located near the front line, depend on external power to keep their nuclear material cool to avoid a catastrophic accident.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today called for “maximum restraint” around the nuclear plant in the region Kursk of Russia, where fighting has raged since Ukrainian forces invaded.

“At this stage, I would like to appeal to all sides to show maximum restraint in order to avoid a nuclear accident,” IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said in a statement.

Earlier today, regional governor Alexei Smirnov announced that power had been cut in the city of Kurchatov, where the nuclear power plant, one of the largest in all of Russia, is located.

In his Telegram post, Smirnov says that debris from a Ukrainian drone fell into a substation of the electricity distribution network in the Kursk region, knocking out electricity in this city of 42,000 people.

Ukrainian soldiers claim to control Shuja

Ukrainian soldiers are seen on video outside a natural gas metering facility in the city of Shuja in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces invaded four days ago and heavy fighting is raging.

Ukrainian soldiers claim they are in control of the city of Shuja, which mayor Vitaly Slashchev denies.

The Reuters news agency emphasizes that it is unable to verify the claim of the Ukrainian soldiers in the disputed video.

Russian authorities have stepped up security at a nuclear power plant in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops invaded and occupied several villages on Tuesday. According to Reuters, the Russian Ministry of Health reported that 31 civilians, including six children, were injured in the area. Governor Alexey Smirnov had previously reported five people dead as a result of the fighting. Moscow did not report military losses.

Smirnov declared a state of emergency in the entire region on Wednesday. Local officials said it means, among other things restricting access to some locations. “The Kursk region continues to face a difficult operational situation in the border regions,” noted Smirnov.

In addition to the three villages, according to Russian bloggers, the Ukrainians also took control of the measuring station in the city of Suja, through which Russian natural gas flows to Europe.

The nuclear power plant, around which security measures have been strengthened, has four reactors and an output of almost two gigawatts. It is located about 60 kilometers from the Ukrainian borderreports the DPA agency.

According to the Russian Ministry of Health, 31 people were injured in the area, of which at least 19 were hospitalized. Among the wounded is the well-known war reporter of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK) Yevgeny Poddubny. Russian media reported that he suffered severe burns as a result of the drone attack.

Contradictory reactions of the Kremlin

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote in its latest report that the Kremlin’s responses to Ukraine’s offensive actions in the Kursk region are contradictory. According to analysts, Russian officials trying to discredit Ukraine internationally for carrying out an attack on Russian territory while avoiding domestic panic over the scale and consequences of the Ukrainian operation. However, by dismissing the significance of the attack and presenting it only as a provocation, the Kremlin is taking a risk, ISW concludes.

Russia shut off our oil, not Ukraine, Slovakia admits for the first time

Money

Now, for the first time ever, Slovakia admits that it was the Russian side that stopped its oil supplies, not the Ukrainian side, as Bratislava and Budapest have claimed so far. According to Slovakian Slovnaft, quoted by Bloomberg, Russian Lukoil has stopped deliveries due to force majeure, which it means the deepening of Ukrainian sanctions, which have been in effect since July this year.

Turkey’s negotiations with China for a nuclear energy plant within the Jap Thrace area are nearing their finish, in line with a report by the Turkish version of the Chinese language community CGTN.

CGTN Türk cites statements by the Turkish Minister of Vitality and Pure Sources, Alparslan Bayraktar, who identified that the 2 nations have extensive alternatives for cooperation within the power sector, stating that investments should enhance in an effort to meet Turkey’s rising power demand.

“We now have to make use of our renewable sources. Second, we have to add nuclear energy to our power combine. Third, we have to use pure fuel as a transition gasoline. We additionally have to put money into vital minerals and a few new applied sciences, corresponding to storage and hydrogen,” stated Alparslan Bayraktar.

Referring to his nation’s cooperation with China within the area of nuclear power, Bayraktar stated: “Our cooperation with China within the nuclear area dates again to 2016, and we signed a cooperation settlement with a Chinese language firm within the nuclear area. Since then, we’ve got been in negotiations for it building of 4 nuclear reactors in Jap Thrace, one of many vital areas of electrical energy demand. We now have a extra stable highway map in entrance of us and I hope that we will full all of those negotiations with this firm.”

Requested if the intergovernmental settlement on the nuclear energy challenge could be signed, the Turkish power minister stated: “We’re working to finish this intergovernmental settlement inside a couple of months.”

“We connect nice significance to power cooperation with China,” Bayraktar emphasised, amongst different issues, noting: “China is the world chief within the area of renewable power sources in lots of respects. The nation has the biggest suppliers of renewable power tools and the biggest renewable power manufacturing firms on the planet. In nuclear energy, it builds many new reactors. Subsequently, I believe we’ve got widespread understanding and targets in these areas.”

Ukraine: The risk of a nuclear accident in Zaporizhia is increasing significantly – 2024-04-13 07:04:53

“Drone attacks in Zaporizhia, Ukraine significantly increase the risk of a nuclear accident,” International Atomic Energy Agency chief Raphael Grossi warned today at a meeting of the IAEA’s board of directors.

Sunday’s drone strike, which hit a building housing one of the plant’s six reactors, was described as the most dangerous security development at Europe’s largest nuclear plant since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow and Kiev have repeatedly accused each other of striking the site of the nuclear plant, which Russian forces seized shortly after the war began. Both sides called for an emergency IAEA board meeting after Sunday’s attack.

“We are meeting today and I will address the UN Security Council next week because it is of the utmost importance to ensure that these reckless attacks do not signal the creation of a new and extremely dangerous front in the war,” Grossi said.

The head of the IAEA emphasized that the attacks on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant area must stop, avoiding, however, to assign responsibility to any of the warring sides.

Dutch House of Representatives Votes to Double Nuclear Power Stations: What This Means for Energy Future

The House of Representatives wants the cabinet to make plans for the construction of four large nuclear power stations instead of two. A majority voted in favor of a motion by VVD MP Silvio Erkens on this matter.

Nuclear energy is seen as a clean energy source because nuclear power plants emit little CO2. And wind and solar energy are insufficient for Dutch energy demand. That is why a broad majority of PVV, VVD, BBB, Denk, Volt, CDA, ChristenUnie, SGP, FvD and JA21 believe that more should be invested in nuclear energy.

According to the proposal, the two additional nuclear power stations should be able to supply energy from 2040. The House does not specify where they should be located. The cabinet has been instructed to investigate this.

From taboo to popular topic

During the election campaign it was already noticeable that more and more political parties are opting for nuclear energy instead of designating new wind farms. The subject is no longer a taboo and VVD MP Erkens even spoke of “a nuclear renaissance”.

D66 leader Rob Jetten announced during the campaign that his party is no longer a fierce opponent of nuclear energy, but sees it as one of the solutions to the climate problem.

Jetten is preparing the construction of two large nuclear power stations on behalf of the outgoing cabinet. His party today voted against two additional power stations. The party thinks this is a good thing for a new cabinet.

The current cabinet decided at the end of 2022 to build two new large power stations in Borssele. With an accelerated approach, these could be ready in 2035. These power stations should supply 9 to 13 percent of the total electricity.

Support base

Borssele was chosen because there is already a nuclear power plant there and there is support among the population and surrounding municipalities and the province of Zeeland. The new cabinet should make a decision about it.

Eemshaven was removed from the list as a possible location, partly due to the consequences of gas extraction and insufficient support. And the Maasvlakte, which was also looked at, the outgoing cabinet wants to reserve for hydrogen installations.

Whether these locations will again be considered for the two additional nuclear power stations must be determined by the next cabinet.
