North Texans Set to Donate Up to $70 Million in 24-Hour Giving Spree
DALLAS-FORT WORTH (November 9, 2023) โ – North Texans are poised toโข contribute up to $70 million to over 3,500 local charities and nonprofits today as part of North Texas Giving Day, one of โฃteh nation’s largest single-day giving events. Organized by the Communitiesโฃ Foundation of Texas, the 24-hour campaign aims to bolsterโ vital services across โthe region.
Among the organizations benefiting from the outpouring of โsupport isโ theโ Nexus Family and โRecovery Center in dallas, a crucial resource for women and children battling substance โขuse.NBC DFW spoke with angelia Wilson, a former patient whoโข now works as a receptionist at Nexus, illustrating the โtransformative impact of the center.
“Iโค didn’t have toโ keep living the way โthat โI was, being inโค trouble. I didn’t have to โdeal with life’s hard times by using,” Wilson shared, recounting her three-month journey to recovery at Nexus. “they โhelped find love for myself. They loved me until I was able to love myself and โฃgiveโค me the confidence that Iโค lost. They gave me the confidence that I could continue to โlive my life.”
Nexus providesโข a lifeline for โฃapproximately 100 women daily, alongsideโ care for up to 40 children.CEO and President Heather Ormand emphasized the importance of supporting families as a whole. “We no momโค can’t get better and focus on herself unless she knows her kids are โsafe and protected as well,” she explained.
The center is hoping to raise $100,000 โข- roughly 5% of its annual operating budget – through North Texas giving Day.โ These funds will directly support five- to ten-day โฃdetox treatments and one- to three-month residential programs for womenโค and children struggling with addiction. Ormand hasโ even added a personal incentive: she’s promised to go skydiving if the $100,000 goal โฃisโฃ met.
“We look atโ recovery as this bigโข step,a leap of faith, that we ask ourโข clients to do every single day and to trust us,” Ormand said.
Robert โKent, from theโข Communities foundation of Texas, highlighted the broader impactโข ofโ the giving day.โ “People have to goโข out and actually do the work, whether โคits working in our schools, supporting our healthcare system, or working on projects like this that Nexus is doing. It all takes people, and it takes resources to make happen.”
The Communities Foundation โof Texas partners โขwith a diverse range of nonprofits, from established organizations like โฃthe Salvation Army to smaller community charities. Last year’s North texas Giving Day raised $70 million, and organizers are aiming to match or exceed thatโ amount this year, filling a critical gap โin funding often left โby government and private sector โขsupport.
