Cinema Employees Union Calls for Strike: Films in Jeopardy, Popcorn Supplies Low

Films could be canceled in several cinemas in the coming days and popcorn bags could remain empty. The reason? The ver.di union is calling for a strike.

The service union ver.di has called on employees of the cinema companies CinemaxX and CineStar to go on strike from Thursday as part of the nationwide collective bargaining. The union announced in a statement on Wednesday that this should last up to and including the weekend. The call therefore applies to cinema locations in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

“The cinema enjoyment for guests is a stressful job behind the scenes, which is why we are demanding an appropriate starting salary of 14 euros per hour instead of the minimum wage,” ver.di negotiator Martha Richards explains the warning strikes. The starting wages at CinemaxX and CineStar currently only reflect the legal minimum wage.

Union describes CineStars offer as “completely inadequate”

CinemaxX and CineStar were among the largest cinema operators in Germany, which will appear in 2023 with films such as “Avatar 2”, “Super Mario Bros.” “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” had an extremely successful year at the cinema, according to the union. “Employees, on the other hand, are having difficulty coping with the rapidly rising cost of living due to low wages,” criticizes Richards.

The union admits that CineStar is willing to offer improvements in the ongoing collective bargaining negotiations. However, from ver.di’s point of view, the current offer from cinema employers is “completely inadequate and unacceptable”. Accordingly, the current offer for the induction phase only provides five cents more than the legal minimum wage. The union is hoping for improvements in the coming negotiations through the warning strike.

Top Restaurants in Düsseldorf: “Feinschmecker” Magazine’s 2024 Rankings

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 14, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The gourmet magazine “Feinschmecker” has chosen the best restaurants in Germany for 2024. These restaurants from Düsseldorf are among them.

The renowned gourmet magazine “Der Feinschmecker” has updated the list of the 500 best restaurants in Germany. Among the top restaurants in all of Germany there are also many from Düsseldorf.

However, none of the local restaurants made it into the testers’ best two categories: “Perfect in every respect” and “Cuisine and service outstanding, ambience and comfort exceptional”. But with some drawbacks, the restaurant belongs “1876 Daniel Dal-Ben” (Grunerstraße 42a) at the Zoopark in the second best category.

No restaurant from the left bank of the Rhine

Between the categories “Excellent cuisine, very good service, comfort and ambience remarkable” and “Very good cuisine, good service, pleasant ambience, comfortable” are the “Agata’s” (Kirchfeldstraße 59), “Am Kai” (Kaistraße 16)”, Zwanzig23 by Lukas Jakobi” (Brunnenstrasse 35) and the “Restaurant typesetting box” (Berliner Allee 52). Striking: Not a single restaurant from Düsseldorf on the left bank of the Rhine made it into the “Feinschmecker” ranking.

According to their own statements, the testers from the “Feinschmecker” editorial team are anonymous and independent – similar to the inspectors from the “Guide Michelin”.

Rose Monday Parades: Politicians’ Satirical Wagon Costumes and Düsseldorf Float Builder’s International Impact

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 12, 2024

Cologne/Düsseldorf/Mainz (dpa) – The street carnival reaches its climax on Monday with the Rose Monday parades. While the fools had to contend with constant rain on Weiberfastnacht, the weather forecast for Monday is at least a little better: large amounts of rain are not expected, the German Weather Service said.

The politicians of the traffic light coalition can take comfort in the fact that on this day they are finally “larger than life” – larger than life. As slightly swaying cardboard mates, they glide past cheering crowds on the satirical wagon. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) suffers a shipwreck in Mainz as a one-eyed captain with an eye patch, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) behaves like a bull in a china shop in Cologne because she occasionally expresses her opinion to autocrats, and Finance Minister Christian Lindner ( FDP) acts – also in Cologne – as a piggy bank, a perhaps not entirely brand new idea. Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) appears in Mainz as Flying Robert, remembering the character from “Struwwelpeter” because he is losing his grip on the ground with his heating law, while in Cologne he is pushing his party colleague Ricarda Lang on an “arbitrary ride”.

As always, the people of Düsseldorf have not yet revealed their motives. Their float builder, Jacques Tilly, is the best-known German carnival float designer, whose figures are even requested from abroad. His designs have already been carried by demonstrators in Rome and London at rallies against the Catholic Church and Brexit.

Lufthansa Ground Staff Warning Strike Impact on Flight Operations in North Rhine-Westphalia

Lufthansa Ground Staff Warning Strike Impact on Flight Operations in North Rhine-Westphalia

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 9, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Düsseldorf (dpa) – After the warning strike by Lufthansa ground staff, Lufthansa flight operations at North Rhine-Westphalia’s major airports have largely returned to normal. After 14 of the 15 Lufthansa departures in Düsseldorf were canceled on Wednesday, only one of these connections was canceled on Thursday – and not due to a strike, as an airport spokesman said.

One of the seven Lufthansa connections at Cologne/Bonn Airport was canceled on Thursday morning as a long-term consequence of the warning strike. No further restrictions were expected there; the day before, five of the seven Lufthansa flights had been canceled there.

According to the Verdi union, more than 50 percent of the Lufthansa ground staff in Düsseldorf had stopped working, including drivers of towing vehicles (pushbacks). The impact of the work stoppage on flight operations as a whole was minimized; a total of 280 take-offs and landings by planes from other airlines were carried out without any problems on Wednesday, Düsseldorf Airport said.

Cologne/Bonn was only indirectly affected, as Lufthansa does not have its own ground staff there – if the plane from Munich did not come because of the strike there, that also had consequences for the location of the cathedral city.

In the collective bargaining dispute, Verdi is demanding 12.5 percent more salary, but at least 500 euros per month for a term of one year. There will also be a group-wide inflation bonus of 3,000 euros. Lufthansa points to past wage increases and has offered 13 percent more money and an inflation bonus for a period of three years. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for Monday.

1. FC Köln Prepares for Bundesliga Clash Against Borussia Dortmund: Who Will Step Up to Score the Goals?

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 20, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

1. FC Köln is hoping for a similarly good performance against Borussia Dortmund as in the first leg, but for a better result. But who should score the goals?

The start of the second half of the season for 1. FC Cologne should take place as planned. The Cologne sports facilities have been pulling out all the stops in the last few days to prepare the Rheinenergiestadion for the Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund and to clear the snow from the grass and the stands. On Saturday it is now time for the “Billy Billy Goats” to give the starting signal for a much better second half of the season and thus prevent the seventh relegation in the club’s history.

The first leg against BVB could have been a good starting point. On the first matchday, August 19, 2023, FC played on a par with last year’s almost champions and missed several top-class chances before Donyell Malen happily scored after 88 minutes to give the favorites a 1-0 win.

“There was more to it than just an unfortunate defeat”

Who knows what kind of course FC’s season would have taken if Cologne had scored points in Dortmund on the first matchday and taken with them self-confidence. “I think everyone still has the first leg in their minds. There was more to it than an unfortunate 1-0 defeat. But that shouldn’t be the focus for Saturday at all,” says licensing department manager Thomas Kessler, not wanting to dwell on what. let in would-if thoughts: “I’m absolutely not a fan of looking far back. In the situation we’re in right now, we should do ourselves the favor of looking forward.”

So here’s to the remaining 17 games in which FC wants to turn things around with Timo Schultz. The new coach tries everything to radiate optimism and courage. Regardless of the first leg and the table, which says something completely different, Schultz speaks of an “eye level” with the Champions League round of 16 from Dortmund and wants to play for a win.

However, Cologne’s problem is well known and has become even worse: goals are needed to win – and Davie Selke, the only FC center forward who has scored so far this season, will be out for weeks. Selke’s five goals are 45.5 percent of Cologne’s only eleven goals. No other Bundesliga professional currently has such a high proportion of his club’s goals. Which is a dubious honor for the “billy goats”.

Starting eleven chance for Dietz?

Schultz leaves it open as to who will replace Selke against Dortmund, saying: “We have enough other boys who want to play and have the ambition to perform in the Bundesliga. It’s the chance for others to step into the breach.” As a one-to-one representation, Steffen Tigges and Florian Dietz would be the “obvious options”. Noticeable: After the final training session on Friday afternoon in the Franz Kremer Stadium, Dietz worked an extra 15-minute shift together with Schultz, who hit crosses. It could be a reference to his first starting XI chance since September 2022.

In the meantime, Dietz had not played a competitive game for almost a year due to a torn cruciate ligament, before he worked his way up again from October 2023 through appearances in the Regionalliga West, where he scored four times in six games. The last Bundesliga goal by a Cologne center forward not named Davie Selke was scored by Steffen Tigges on May 20, 2023 in Bremen. It has been a long time.

Trial of Teachers in 13-Year-Old Student’s Death on Study Trip

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 18, 2024

Mönchengladbach (dpa) – In the trial against two teachers following the death of a 13-year-old student on a study trip, the defendants initially remained silent. The two women, aged 34 and 60, have been facing charges of negligent homicide before the Mönchengladbach regional court since Wednesday. The trial began more than four years after the death of a diabetic student on a trip to London.

The two defendants are said to have not explicitly asked about previous illnesses among the students at a preparatory meeting for the trip. But the legal guardians and the 13-year-old herself hadn’t pointed this out either. The student died in a hospital in London one day after the planned departure.

The teachers appeared in court with their hoods and face masks pulled low over their faces. Neither initially wanted to testify, but gave brief personal statements. The 60-year-old, a teacher for 28 years, spoke of a “stroke of fate” on the trip. The younger teacher said it was difficult to bear that a young person had died on the trip.

The indictment also revealed that the student, who shared a room with two friends, neglected to take the necessary blood sugar measurements and add insulin during the trip. Towards the end she was completely weakened. On the day of her scheduled departure, she was unable to dress herself. The friends brushed her teeth. Then the 13-year-old was taken to the hospital.

The trial began after years of legal wrangling. The father had asked the public prosecutor’s office to reopen the investigation and also ensured that the case be heard in the regional court. If found guilty, the penalty ranges from a fine to five years in prison. Experts and many witnesses are expected to be heard by May. These include teachers, Emily’s father and mother and classmates.
