Addiction Treatment Programs | BMC Grayken Center

written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Nearly 1,000 healthcare professionals and individuals impacted by substance use disorder gathered at Boston Medical Center (BMC) in February 2026 for the hospital’s state-wide addiction summit, according to a recent announcement.

The summit, described as a response to the ongoing opioid crisis and broader challenges related to addiction, featured discussions on innovative treatment approaches and strategies for improving access to care. BMC’s Grayken Center for Addiction hosted the event, building on the success of its second annual conference focused on advancing care and support for those living with substance use disorders.

A key theme emerging from the summit, as highlighted by attendees, was the importance of shifting language around addiction. BMC is actively working to change how addiction is discussed and understood, moving away from stigmatizing terms and embracing a more compassionate and evidence-based approach. This initiative, spearheaded by America’s Essential Hospitals, aims to reduce barriers to treatment and foster a more supportive environment for individuals seeking recovery.

The summit also showcased the power of unconventional recovery methods. One participant shared her story of finding recovery through musical theater and now dedicates her time to helping others utilize the arts as a pathway to healing. This exemplifies a growing trend of integrating creative therapies into addiction treatment programs.

BMC officials have not yet announced specific policy changes resulting directly from the summit, but have indicated that the discussions will inform future initiatives aimed at expanding addiction services and improving patient outcomes. The hospital continues to emphasize its commitment to addressing the complex needs of individuals and families affected by substance use disorder.
