Nobel Laureate Marรญa Corina Machado Confirmedโ to Attend Oslo ceremony
Oslo, Norway – โNovember 5, 2025 -โ Venezuelan opposition leader Marรญa Corina Machado, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient, will โtravel to โOsloโฃ to accept the award on december 10th,โค theโฃ Norwegian โNobel Commitee announced today.
Committee leader Jรธrgen Watneโข Frydnes confirmed Machado’s โฃplans in a statement to Norwegian public television NRK, while acknowledging the inherent risks involved. “She herself has made it clear that โsheโฃ will come. Simultaneously occurring,it must be noted that it is indeed a hazardous trip as the Venezuelan regime has said that it wants to get her out of the โway,” Frydnes stated. He expressed hope forโ Machado’s safe passage to and from Norway, emphasizing the importance of her continued work in Venezuela.
Machado previously told the Norwegian newspaper Today’s Business in October that her ability to travel depended on Venezuela achieving freedom, and cited security concerns asโ long as Nicolรกs โMaduro remains in power.โข “I cannot leave โคthe place โwhere Iโข am hiding because โฃther are direct threatsโข against my life,” she said atโข the time.
According to the Nobel Committee’s schedule โreleased earlier this month, Machado is expected to participate in the traditional Nobel laureate press conference at the Nobel Institute in Oslo on December 9th.
The Norwegianโ Nobel Committee, comprised โof five members appointed byโค the Norwegian Parliamentโค for โsix-year terms reflecting โthe parliamentary โbalance of power, selected Machado for theโข prestigious prize. Her selection garnered support from Norway’s major political parties, with only the Socialist Left Party and Red party voicing criticism.
Despite disagreementโฃ with the Committee’sโ choice, the Norwegian Peace โฃCouncil, representing 17 pacifist organizations and approximately 15,000 activists, announced it would forgo its traditional torchlight procession โฃthrough Oslo on the day of the โฃNobel ceremony. President Eline H.โฃ Lorentzen described โคthe decision as “tough but โnecessary,” โstating that “some” of Machado’s methods “are notโค in โขline with our principles andโฃ values โโor those of โour member organizations, suchโ as the promotion of dialog and non-violent methods.”
The Norwegian Venezuelan Justice Alliance, a Norwegian NGO dedicatedโ to promoting freedom, democracy,โ and human rights in Venezuela, โhas stepped forward to organize this year’s procession.
