Increasing Bear โSightings Raise Concerns About Potential Urban Presence in Tokyo – Can Zero Damageโค Be Achieved?โฃ (Published September 15th,2025) | YTVโ NEWS NNN
Tokyo,Japan – A recent surge in โขbear โactivity across Japan has prompted concernsโฃ about the potential for encounters within theโข 23 wards of Tokyo. According to the Ministry of the Surroundings,69 people sustained injuries from bear encounters between april and the end of August of this year, tragically including five fatalities. Experts warn thatโฃ bear appearances in โurban and suburban areas are likely toโ increase this fall, necessitating โheightened โpublic awareness and preventative measures.
The growing proximity of bears toโฃ humanโ populations isn’tโ simplyโค a matter of increased bear numbers, explains Oi Toru, a specially appointed professor at Ishikawa Prefecturalโ University andโค an expert in bear ecology. “The number of bears has increased, andโ their โขhabitat has expanded, leading โtoโข moreโ frequent interactionsโ wiht humans,” Professor Oi โฃstated in a recent interview with YTV’s “Saturday LIVE News Zigzag.”
Historically, bear โฃhabitat loss due to forest growth in the 1950s and โ70sโข forced bears into closer contact โคwith humanโค settlements. However, Professor Oi emphasizes that the current situation isโ different. “Rather โthan being driven from the mountains, bears are nowโ expanding their range โfrom deep within the mountains โคto the outskirts of urban areas.โข This expansion is fueled by increased food โฃavailability – both natural resources and crops grown by humans – creating a viable base for โคpopulation growth.”
Research conducted by professor Oi indicates thatโข while mostโ bears remain within 100 meters of forestedโข areas, individuals have been observed as far as 10-20 kilometers from the forest edge.โ This raises โขthe possibility of bears utilizing waterways โคas travel โฃcorridorsโค into the city.
“It is possible that bears will flow out of their habitatโฃ and then come out โof the river that โflows into the city as a travel route,”โ Professor Oiโ explained. “Such as, theโ Tama River. bears appear near the mountains of Hachioji. Originally, they only existed in Oku-Chichibu, butโค the distribution of โbears isโ gradually โspreading towards โฃthe city center. It cannot be denied that these bears may suddenly appear along the Tama River and inโฃ the 23 wards.”
Adding to theโ concern is a noticeable trend: bears are becoming increasingly habituated โขto โhuman presence. “Not โคall bears are used to it,” Professor Oi clarified, “Though, there โขare more and more bears who are used to it โand notโ afraid of people. I thinkโฃ 99% of bears are defensive rather than aggressive.” This reducedโข fear, while not indicative of aggression, increases the likelihood of encounters and potential conflict.
The question remains: how can Japan strive forโข zero bear-related damage in urban areas? Further โคresearch into bear movement patterns, coupled with robust public education campaigns on bear safety and responsible waste management, are crucialโ first steps. YTV NEWS NNN will โคcontinueโฃ to โคfollow this developing story and provide updates as they becomeโฃ available.
