Cowboys Name Six Season-Long Team Captains, Signaling Shift in Leadership Structure
The Dallas Cowboys have announced six players who will serve as team captains for the 2024 season, marking a return to a more traditional leadership model under new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. This represents a change from the rotating weekly captaincies utilized during Mike mccarthy’s tenure, which at times included players recently elevated from the practice squad.
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb will lead the offense, while Osa Odighizuwa and Donovan Wilson will represent the defense. Brandon Aubrey and C.J. Goodwin were selected as captains for special teams.
Schottenheimer expressed his admiration for the group’s diverse leadership styles, stating, “You look at those guys and their leadership comes in all different forms. That’s what I like about (this group). I was blown away. The guys made it very clear,’Hey Schotty, four is not enough.’ The way the voting came in, it was realy close.” He added that the players are eager to wear the ”C” on their jerseys.
Prescott, entering his tenth season with the Cowboys, emphasized the meaning of the honor. “It’s something I don’t take for granted,” he said. “To be selected as that and really to be one of the six elected…it just means they’re handling business, doing things the right way.”
In addition to the six permanent captains, Schottenheimer intends to name a ”captain of the week” each week beginning in Week 2, based on performance in practice and meetings. each unit – offense, defense, and special teams – will have two designated captains.
