Aid Flotilla Departsโ Barcelona for Gaza Amidst Ongoing Conflict
A maritime convoy of approximately 20 vessels,โ carryingโค aid โandโ activists from 44 countries, has set sail fromโ Barcelona, โSpain,โ aiming to break the 18-year israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. Organizers state this isโข the largest attempt to deliver aid by sea to Gaza to date, wiht additional ships expected to โคjoin from โคports โขin Italy,Greece, and Tunisia.
The voyage โcomes as โขthe conflict in Gaza continues, โคhaving resulted in โขover โ63,000 fatalities, according to the โขGaza Health Ministry. The ministry alsoโข reports at least 332 Palestinians have died from malnutrition, including โข124 children.
Thousands of โขsupporters gathered at the Barcelona pier to see theโข flotilla depart, chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine!” and “Boycottโค Israel!” Theโฃ shipsโ themselves vary widely, ranging fromโ older yachts to smaller โsailboats and industrial vessels, all displaying Palestinian flags.โ one vessel, the Sirus,is over โa century โold.Prominent figures participating in the expeditionโ includeโ Swedish activist Greta Thunberg,โ actorsโ Susan โSarandon and Liamโ Cunningham, former Barcelona mayor Adaโ Colau, and numerous other activists and journalists. This is not Thunberg’s first attempt โto reach Gaza this year; she was deported โin june after the โฃIsraeli military intercepted the Madleen, โขthe ship she wasโฃ travelling on with 11 others.
Thunberg stated that โฃIsrael has “continuously violating international law”โฃ by intercepting aid ships and โคpreventing humanitarian assistance from reaching Gaza. Cunningham highlighted the dire situation, sharingโ a video of a young girl, Fatima, who had recently โขdied โafter filming herself planning her own โfuneral.
The effort follows a similar incident in late July, where โฃthe Israeli military halted โanother aid ship, โคdetaining 21 international activists โคand reporters and confiscating its โขcargo of baby formula, food, and โขmedicine, according to the โFreedom Flotilla โCoalition.
Simultaneously occurring,an Israeli official announced Saturday that humanitarian aid toโ northern Gaza will soon be halted or slowed as the military expands its offensive against Hamas. This announcement follows theโฃ declaration of Gaza City as a combat zone.โ
The โcurrent conflict began on โOctober 7, 2023, with a Hamas attack on Israel โthatโ resulted in โthe deaths of 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians, and the โtaking of 251 โhostages.
