H3N2โฃ Flu Strain Fuels concerns โof Arduous Winter in โขNorthern Hemisphere
Geneva,Switzerland – November 8,2023 – A newly dominant influenza strain,H3N2,is rapidly โspreading across the Northern Hemisphere, prompting health officials to warn of a possibly challenging winter season. โThe World โคHealthโฃ organization (WHO) reports the strain, first detected in June, is exhibitingโ accelerated transmission rates and has become the โprevalent influenza โtype in several countries.
Dr. Wenqing Zhang,โ Head of the WHO’s Respiratory Threats Unit, confirmedโ theโ swift spread of H3N2, noting its increasing dominance globally. This surge is being acutely felt inโค Europe, whereโ James Mackey, Director โof the United Kingdom’s national Health Service (NHS), reports a tripling โขof flu cases compared to โthis time last year. Mackey โคstated the UK isโข bracingโ for a notably difficult winter due to โขthe escalating numbers.
The โincreaseโค isn’t limited to the UK. Experts areโค observing similar upticksโข in Canada, and Japan is experiencing whatโฃ officials areโ calling “unprecedented” levels of influenza activity. In Tokyo alone, flu casesโ have risen sixfold compared to the same period in 2022, forcing the partial closure โof over 2,300 schools and nurseries.
H3N2 falls within the โinfluenza Aโ virusโฃ family. While positive influenza A tests are widespread, extensive national โฃdata collection in the United States is โขcurrently hampered by theโข ongoing government shutdown. The U.S. Centers for Disease Controlโข and Prevention (CDC) has not published detailed national flu data sinceโ September 26th.
Dr. William schaffner, a professorโค at โฃVanderbilt University Medical Center, expressed concern that recent layoffs at the CDC may further disrupt the crucial data analysis process. while state and university laboratories will continue toโข contribute to surveillance, Schaffner emphasized that national monitoring will be less timely and โcomprehensive than โขin previous years.
Despite potential mismatches between the circulating strain and this year’s vaccine, Schaffner underscored the continued importance of vaccination. “Decades of data consistently demonstrate that the flu vaccine significantly โขreduces the risk of hospitalization and the need for intensive care, even when it’s not a perfect match to the dominant strain,” he stated. โ
Healthโ officials are urging individualsโ to practiceโ preventative measures, including vaccination, frequent handwashing, and staying home when sick, to mitigate the spread of H3N2 and โขprotect vulnerable populations this winter.
