NFLPA Executive Director Resigns Amidst FBI Investigation and Conflict of Interest Allegations
The Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), DeMaurice smith, has resigned from his position, citing that his leadership role had become a distraction from the union’s core work. The declaration comes as the NFLPA faces scrutiny over its dealings with its licensing firm, oneteam Partners, and potential conflicts of interest involving its leadership.
Smith, who had led the NFLPA for 14 years, from 2009 to 2023, was succeeded by Howell Jr. just two years ago. The FBI is reportedly investigating OneTeam Partners, which manages billions of dollars in player rights, for potential illicit enrichment by officials. Similar investigations are also underway concerning the Major League baseball Players Association (MLBPA).
Adding to the controversy, internal NFLPA documents suggest Howell Jr. also served as a consultant for Carlyle, an investment firm seeking to acquire stakes in NFL teams. This dual role has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest,as Carlyle’s business objectives could possibly clash with the interests of NFL players.
Reports indicate that Howell Jr. was urged to consider stepping down by an attorney representing the players’ union. Further allegations suggest that Howell Jr. withheld a critically importent arbitration ruling concerning the limitation of guaranteed player contracts for several months. This ruling, which reportedly involved potential collusion between the NFL and its teams to reduce guaranteed salaries for veteran players, left many players confused about the union’s inaction.
