Patriots Place Rookie Tackle Will Campbell on IR, Trigger Roster moves
The New England Patriots have placed rookie offensive tackle Will Campbell on injured reserve following their Week 12 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the team announced Tuesday. This move comes as the Patriots navigate mounting injuries on the offensive line and in the secondary.
Campbell’s placement on IR opens a roster spot that was filled by cornerback Miles Battle,who was promoted from the practice squad. Too create space for Battle, cornerback Alex Austin was also placed on injured reserve. Rookie cornerback Brandon Crossley then filled Battle’s vacated practice squad spot, returning the Patriots to their previous player totals at both offensive tackle and cornerback.
The Patriots have added offensive tackle depth by signing Thayer Munford Jr., a former practice squad member, to bolster the position alongside current starters Vederian Lowe and Morgan Moses, backup Marcus Bryant, and practice squadder Sebastian Gutierrez.Lowe will now take over starting duties for Campbell for at least the next four games.
Campbell is not the onyl Patriots offensive lineman currently sidelined. Left guard Jared Wilson suffered a high ankle sprain just three snaps into the Bengals game and is considered week-to-week.He will miss this week’s game against the New York Giants. The Patriots’ upcoming bye week after 14 games provides both Campbell and Wilson with additional time to recover. Ben Brown is expected to replace Wilson in the lineup.
