NBA‘s New Broadcast Deal Presents Scheduling Challenges, Potential Impactโ toโ Regional Sports โNetworks
NEW โฃYORK -โค September 25, 2024 – The NBA’s recently finalized mediaโฃ rights agreements,โข distributingโ gamesโฃ across a wider array โขof platforms, will require a period of adjustment โfor both the league and its โfans, according to NBA Executive Vice President David Li. The sweeping โขdeal, encompassing both โthe NBA and WNBA, marks a significant shift in how games are broadcast, moving from โtwo partners and three networks toโ threeโ partners and five.
The new agreements, detailed in a SportsMediaWatch โreport, willโ see games aired on ABC, ESPN, NBC, TNT, and โstreaming services like amazon Prime โVideo. while expanding access, the increaseโ in national television games – roughly a โ45% jump – will inevitablyโ lead to “a slightโข reduction in the number of games thatโ are available โฃfor local broadcast,” Li conceded.
This shift has raised concerns about the โviability of Regional โฃSports Networks (RSNs). Knicks owner Jim Dolan, who also owns the MSG RSN, expressed this concern in โคa letter to the league last year, warning the new deal risked “rendering the entireโค RSN model โunviable” โdue to โฃthe โincreased โnational coverage.
despite the expanded national presence, some โขexclusivityโฃ will remain. ABC games and NBC’s opening โNight doubleheader and Sunday โnight package will continue to beโ broadcast exclusively.โค However, a departure from tradition, NBC’s weekly โTuesday “Coast to Coast”โ games โฃand Martin Luther King โฃDay โฃslate will be non-exclusive, โคa rarity for NBA gamesโฃ on broadcast television.
The โฃWNBA is alsoโ impacted by the newโ media landscape. Unlike โฃthe NBA deal, the WNBA’s agreement with NBC included games on USA Network, whichโฃ isโฃ being spun off into a โnew venture called โคVersant. The league is currently “freshening upโ the โคdeal terms” with an expected completion date before โthe start of โฃnext season. The WNBA Finals will also rotate control, with NBCU holding rights for next year’s best-of-sevenโข series, โคand the split between NBCU andโค Versant still โbeing finalized.
Li acknowledged the complexity ofโค scheduling games across the โexpanded network roster. โข”It was much more challenging, probably two orโ threeโฃ times harder, โคjust because whenโ your managing threeโฃ partners, five networks, [that’s] just way more national TV games.”
Balancing national broadcast demands with team schedules andโ travel logistics proved especially difficult. “We have to consider the teamโค schedulesโฆWe can’t make team travel โand the team schedule cadences tooโฃ onerous,”โ Li explained. โ”We’ll definitelyโฃ learn from this first season, and then I’m โsure we’ll try to improveโ for future โseasons as well.”
Theโค NBA’s move towards aโ wider distribution model mirrors trends across other major sports leagues. Major League Baseball coudl have as many as five partnersโฃ andโ seven networks next season, and the NFL is nowโ broadcasting games onโ FOX,NBC,CBS,ESPN,ABC,Netflix,YouTube, and NFL Network. This โbroader dispersal ofโ game inventory is becoming the new norm in the evolving sports media landscape.
