Thousands Seek Relief Through Naturopathy and Yoga in Madurai
Government Hospital’s Department Offers Treatments for Arthritis, Rheumatism, and More
In Madurai, over 16,500 individuals have sought treatment via naturopathy and yoga since early 2024, finding solace from conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis. This surge in popularity demonstrates a growing interest in these holistic approaches to healthcare, especially among those seeking alternative options for pain management and improved well-being.
Numbers Show Significant Uptake
The Government Rajaji Hospital’s Naturopathy and Yoga Science department has seen a steady stream of patients. Records show that 1,051 patients visited the department in January 2024. The following months also saw considerable figures: 1,040 (February), 1,075 (March), 1,039 (April), 1,044 (May), 998 (June), 1,043 (July), 839 (August), 1,040 (September), 903 (October), 876 (November), and 818 (December). In 2025, the numbers were: 503 (January), 974 (February), 1,164 (March), 1,118 (April), and 1,005 (May). The reintroduction of mud therapy has also drawn 527 individuals in the last three months.
โPoor patients from Madurai are attracted to yoga for effective management of arthritis, rheumatism and obesity symptoms. Though these cannot be cured, proper exercise can help alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and most importantly improve overall health.โ
โDr. Nagarani Natchiyar, Assistant Medical Officer
According to a recent study, around 30% of adults in the United States experience chronic pain, a condition for which many seek alternative treatments (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).
Additional Therapies and Benefits
Dr. Natchiyar emphasized that naturopathy and yoga are helpful for managing obesity and aiding weight loss. She noted that these approaches serve as “complementary approaches to a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include dietary plan, exercise and counselling.”
The mud therapy, which was absent for a year due to supply issues, has been reintroduced. Dr. Natchiyar explained that “Mud therapy is used for imparting coolness and enhancing the immunity to the body through blood circulation. The mud dilutes and absorbs toxic substances in the body and ultimately eliminates them from the anatomy.” This therapy uses cleaned and filtered mud to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis and skin problems.
