## National Guardsman Accused of Attempting to Smuggle Military Tech to Russia
A National guardsman has been charged with conspiring to export sensitive military technology to Russia, federal prosecutors announced thursday. Canyon Amarys, 23, of Edinburg, Texas, allegedly attempted to ship specialized radio equipment to contacts in Russia, potentially violating U.S. export regulations. The case raises concerns about potential security breaches within the military and the illicit flow of technology to adversarial nations.
The Justice Department alleges Amarys began communicating with individuals believed to be Russian intelligence officers in late 2022, expressing anti-American sentiments and a desire to assist Russia. He is accused of attempting to circumvent U.S. law by concealing the true nature of the equipment and its intended recipient. If convicted, Amarys faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
According to court documents, Amarys, serving in the Texas army National Guard, allegedly sought guidance from his contacts on how to transfer the radio equipment, including advice on packaging and shipping methods to avoid detection. Prosecutors stated he did not disclose his communications with the individuals to military authorities and failed to research relevant export regulations prior to his February meeting, prosecutors said.
investigators intercepted a parcel containing the radio equipment before it left the United States, seizing the item and launching a full investigation. The specific type of radio and its capabilities have not been publicly disclosed, but authorities emphasize its potential value to the Russian military.
amarys is currently awaiting trial. The case is being investigated by the FBI and the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and security.
