Winter Olympics 2024: Live Updates, Results & Highlights | Poland News

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 20, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Mediolan, Italy – Natalia Czerwonka, representing Poland, has been named the flag bearer for the Polish delegation at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, officials announced Friday. The honor, described by Czerwonka as almost as important as winning a medal, comes as she prepares for her fifth Olympic Games.

Czerwonka, born October 20, 1988, is one of Poland’s most decorated speed skaters. Her return to competition after announcing her retirement in 2022 has been a significant story leading into the Games. She will compete in the 1000 and 1500-meter events. She previously won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The selection of Czerwonka as flag bearer alongside ski jumper Kamil Stoch was made official ahead of the opening ceremony scheduled for Friday evening at the San Siro stadium in Milan.

The Polish team’s participation comes amid scrutiny of the Olympic venue itself. Czerwonka recently expressed concerns about the conditions at the Expo hall, which has been converted into an ice rink for the Games. She described the setup as feeling “like a market,” with temporary structures and limited space, contrasting it with previous Olympic venues. Despite these concerns, Czerwonka stated that athletes are adapting to the conditions.

Earlier this week, Natalia Czerwonka appeared to publicly criticize fellow Polish speed skater Andżelika Wójcik, posting on social media a photo celebrating the sixth-place finish of Kai Ziomek-Nogal. This followed Wójcik’s statements after the 500-meter race, where she claimed to have prepared for the Olympics without a coach and criticized the support from the Polish Speed Skating Association. The President of the Polish Speed Skating Association responded by publicly accusing Wójcik of lying.

Czerwonka began her Olympic campaign on Thursday, finishing 15th in the 1000-meter race. She described her participation as “my event and my fun,” emphasizing her enjoyment of the competition. The next scheduled event for Polish speed skaters is a race featuring Czerwonka, set for 16:30 local time today.

Atalanta vs Borussia Dortmund: Zalewski’s Effort in Champions League Defeat

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 18, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Atalanta defeated Lazio 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, February 14, 2026, propelled by a penalty from Ederson and a second-half strike from Nicola Zalewski, according to reports from multiple sources including Football Italia and Yahoo Sports.

The victory lifts Atalanta to sixth place in the Serie A standings and extends their unbeaten run, while simultaneously halting Lazio’s streak of four consecutive positive results. The match also served as preparation for Atalanta’s upcoming Champions League playoff clash against Borussia Dortmund.

The first half saw a near miss for Lazio when goalkeeper Ivan Provedel ventured out of his area and was dispossessed by Lorenzo Bernasconi, who passed to Nikola Krstovic. However, Oliver Provstgaard intervened with a crucial goal-line clearance, as detailed in The Laziali report. Lazio’s Kenneth Taylor also tested Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, hitting the post with a volley.

Atalanta took the lead shortly before halftime when they were awarded a penalty, converted by Ederson. The penalty stemmed from a play involving David Zappacosta and Krstovic, as reported by Sky Sport.

Nicola Zalewski doubled Atalanta’s advantage in the 60th minute with a well-struck shot from outside the penalty area. Prior to Zalewski’s goal, Carnesecchi had denied a scoring opportunity from Lazio’s Tijjani Noslin, according to Football Italia.

The match was not without incident. Atalanta’s Gustav Isaksen was substituted in the 25th minute after receiving an early yellow card, replaced by Sead Kolasinac. Later in the game, Atalanta forward Gianluca Scamacca was replaced by Nikola Krstovic at halftime, a change that proved fruitful in earning the penalty that led to the first goal.

Late in the second half, Atalanta’s Rasopadori sustained an injury, forcing them to finish the match with ten players. The nature of the injury is reported as a potential flexor muscle strain, raising concerns ahead of their Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund on February 25th, as reported by Sky Sport.

The return leg of the Champions League playoff against Borussia Dortmund is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25th, with the outcome determining Atalanta’s progression to the round of 16.

MEDIOlAN-CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy – The Winter Olympics continued today in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo with a focus on the newly introduced Olympic pairs ski jumping competition, set to begin at 7:00 PM local time. Representing Poland in the event are Kacper Tomasiak and Paweł Wąsek, according to reports from Polish media.

The Polish team is among those competing in a busy day of events. Michał Jasiczek is scheduled to compete in alpine skiing, while Gabriela Topolska, Felix Pigeon, and Michał Niewiński will participate in short track speed skating. Linda Weiszewski will compete in bobsleigh, and the figure skating pairs team of Julija Szczetinin and Michał Woźniak will perform their free skate program.

Former Polish ski jumper Adam Małysz has publicly stated his confidence in the Polish team’s potential for success at these Games, according to Polskie Radio 24. While the specific goals were not detailed, Małysz’s endorsement underscores the national expectation for strong performances.

Kacper Tomasiak was recently appointed as the Deputy Minister of Sport, a development noted by Polish news outlet Do Rzeczy. The timing of this appointment, coinciding with his Olympic participation, has drawn some attention within Poland.

The introduction of the ski jumping pairs event is a new addition to the Olympic program, aiming to attract a wider audience to the sport. The competition format and judging criteria are consistent with individual ski jumping events, but with scores combined for the two athletes.

The Polish Olympic Committee has not yet released a statement regarding medal expectations for today’s events. The schedule continues with training sessions in Nordic combined and curling, setting the stage for further competition throughout the week.

Marco Rubio: US Signals New Era in Alliances at Munich Security Conference

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 13, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Munich Security Conference, beginning Friday, as part of a broader European tour that will likewise include stops in Budapest, and Bratislava. Rubio, leading the American delegation, signaled a shift in geopolitical strategy and a reevaluation of transatlantic relations.

Rubio, speaking to reporters before departing Washington, asserted that the established international order has fundamentally changed. “We’re living in a new era of geopolitics, which will require all of us to rethink what that looks like and what our role will be,” he stated, according to Reuters. The upcoming Munich Security Conference is intended to be a forum for defining a shared future with European allies, with European leaders seeking clarity on U.S. Objectives and collaborative goals.

A meeting with Zelenskyy appears highly probable. “I think I’m on the schedule. I’m pretty confident we’ll have a chance to see each other,” Rubio said, as reported by TVN24. Zelenskyy is scheduled to receive the Ewald von Kleist Award at the conference, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk delivering the laudation, according to conference organizers.

Rubio’s trip also includes a visit to Hungary and Slovakia, described as bilateral engagements resulting from prior invitations. He emphasized that both countries are “particularly strong in our alliance” and maintain close cooperation with the United States. When questioned about potential pressure on Hungary to cease purchasing Russian energy, Rubio offered a diplomatic response: “We’ll talk to them about what needs to be done,” declining to elaborate on the specifics of private discussions.

The Secretary of State condemned ongoing Russian bombardments as causing “unimaginable suffering,” particularly during the winter months. “It’s terrible. It’s a war. That’s why we want the war to end,” Rubio said, noting that U.S. Diplomats have been working for over a year to achieve a resolution to the conflict.

Rubio will meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday, and is scheduled to deliver remarks at the conference on Saturday, according to the Associated Press. More than 50 members of the U.S. Congress are accompanying Rubio on the trip. Last year, then-Vice President J.D. Vance represented the U.S. At the conference, delivering a speech that sparked considerable controversy.

The focus of Rubio’s visit, according to U.S. Officials, is to strengthen cooperation with Europe regarding the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, as reported by Polsat News. The conference agenda will address shifts in the global order, transatlantic relations, the conflict in Iran, and the war in Ukraine.
