Eden Housing Scam: Rs3.2 Billion in Fifth Installment Delivered
Victims of the notorious Eden Housing Scam are beginning to see substantial returns, as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Lahore has initiated the distribution of a significant Rs3.2 billion. The latest disbursement marks a critical phase in the ongoing recovery efforts for thousands affected by the fraudulent scheme.
Chairman Praises Recovery Efforts, Promises Digital Payments
The cheque distribution ceremony, held at NAB Lahore, was presided over by NAB Chairman, Lt Gen (retired) **Nazir Ahmad**. Under the watchful eye of Director General NAB Lahore, Mr. **Ghulam Safdar Shah**, the event underscored NAB’s commitment to its mandate.

Chairman **Nazir Ahmad** revealed that total claims from 11,880 victims amounted to Rs13 billion. Through plea bargains, NAB has secured Rs16 billion, surpassing the original claims by 23%. To date, NAB Lahore has recovered Rs11.8 billion from Eden authorities, with Rs8.6 billion already disbursed. The bureau continues its pursuit of the remaining Rs4.2 billion.
Looking ahead, **Nazir Ahmad** announced a shift towards a more efficient digital payment system. Victims will no longer need to visit NAB offices; compensation will be directly transferred to their bank accounts, streamlining the process for greater accessibility.
NAB Lahore’s Extensive Recovery and Reforms
NAB Lahore has demonstrated a robust track record, with total recoveries reaching Rs236 billion since its inception. This includes Rs45.5 billion from direct recoveries and Rs177 billion through indirect means. The bureau has successfully filed 1,381 references in Accountability Courts, with 1,265 already decided.
Director General **Ghulam Safdar Shah** elaborated on key reforms implemented during the current leadership. These include monthly public hearings, the establishment of specialized facilitation desks, the adoption of the term “defendant” to ensure due process, and enhanced confidentiality during investigations. Reforms also encompass revisions to auction policies, the creation of a dedicated Land Directorate, and the integration of AI into investigative processes.
According to Transparency International Pakistan, anti-corruption efforts in Pakistan have seen some positive impacts, with a reported decrease in corruption perception index scores in recent years, indicating a growing focus on accountability and institutional reform, though challenges remain (Transparency International Pakistan, 2023 Annual Report).
