Mexico City – A gas tanker truckโข exploded on a highway in eastern Mexico City on Tuesday, killingโค at least eight people adn injuring dozens more, including young children. โขThe blastโ sent a towering plume of smoke into theโข air and sparked a massive fire, โคprompting a large-scale emergency response.
The incidentโข occurred in the densely populated Iztapalapa district. Emergency โคcrews are continuing to attend to the injured, some of whom suffered burns over 100% of โtheir bodies, and secure the area. A baby and a 2-year-old child whereโข among thoseโค hurt.
The causeโค of the explosion is under investigation, but the incident highlights a recurring safety concern in โขMexico involving the transport of hazardous materials.โ Similar tankerโค accidents in recent years have resulted in โฃnotable loss of life andโ raised questions about โฃregulatory oversight.
As โฃnews of theโ tragedy spread, residents near the hospitals where victims were taken mobilized to offer support.A โขgroup of neighbors pooled money to โbuy sweet โbread and coffee, handing it out to family โmembers โanxiously awaiting updates. “It’s โคa wayโค to help, and also give thanks that we’re still alive,”โ one resident said.
The tanker bore the โlogo of Silza โขTransport, but an initial company denial ofโฃ ownership was followed by aโ statement acknowledging responsibility and outlining existing insurance โขpolicies to coverโข damages and support affected families. Though, theโค federal agency regulating industrialโ safetyโ in the hydrocarbon sector โคstated that Silza lacked โคupdated insuranceโ paperwork required โขfor gas โtransport. The company has not yet responded toโฃ requests for further comment.
This is not the first time a gas tankerโ has been involved in a deadly incident in Mexico.โ In 2020, a double tanker carrying liquid โคpropane overturned in Nayarit, killing 13 โpeople.โข In 2015, a propane โtruck leak at a Mexico City maternity hospitalโฃ caused an explosion that killed five and injured dozens.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada visited the scene, calling โthe accident “horrible.” President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed โคher condolences to the families of the deceased and thanked emergency teams via X, formerly known as Twitter.
