Madrid – The iconic Spanish pop duo, โคMecano, saw a โคresurgence in the emotional resonance of thier 1988 hit “Resistir” (“Resisted”)โฃ thru aโข confluence of artistic collaboration and personal hardship, a story revealed in โฃrecent interviews and ancient accounts.
The song, featured on Mecano’s album Fit, was not penned by the group’s core members, Josรฉ Marรญa Cano and Ana โฃTorroja, but by Carlos Toro, a sports journalist โfor the newspaper El Mundo.Toro’s career primarily focused on athletics coverage, but he also contributed lyrics to artists like Paulina Rubio and Marta Sรกnchez, and translated songs by Franco Battiato and Demis roussos intoโ Spanish. He is also credited โwith writing the Spanish lyrics โfor the โคtheme song of the children’s series Oliver yโค Benji.
Toro recounted in a 2020 interview with El Paรญs that the song’s genesis โคstemmedโข from a phrase by Spanish novelist Camilo Josรฉ Cela. โฃ”Manuel [De la Calva] told meโ that he had heard a phrase from Cela that he liked: ‘He who resists, wins.’ And I started to work on it,” Toro explained. He wrote “Resistir” during a period of personal difficulty, a sentimental breakup, leading him to a โฃpessimistic โฃoutlook he described as believingโ “this world is a sterus.”
Initially, “Resistir” achieved moderate success upon its release. โฃHowever, its popularity dramatically increased afterโ being featured prominently in Pedro Almodรณvar’s 1990 film, ยกรtame!. The song plays during the film’s โclosing sceneโฃ as the three main characters – โฃportrayed by Loles Leรณn, Antonio Banderas, and Victoria Abril – drive towards an uncertain butโ hopeful future following a period of turmoil.
Yearsโข later,Mecanoโ facedโฃ a health crisis when Manuel de la Calva fell ill,forcing the cancellation of a concert in โValencia. He later โunderwent surgery โคfor colon cancer. During his recovery, de โขla Calva found solace in “Resistir,” โa songโฃ he described as a โsource of strength. He shared with El Paรญs in โ2020: โค”I clung toโค the song, to his message. I am stillโฃ seeing myself, singing โwith theโ nurses and the doctors of our hospital โ Resistir. There must be what theyโ call poetic justice, there is there’s no doubt whatsoever. It served me, go if it helped me.”
