Pedro Brand Residents โขblockโ Roads in Fiery Protest Against Proposedโค Waste Treatment โPlant
PEDRO BRAND,Dominican Republic โ- Residents of Cuba,Teh Avocado, and La โGuayiga in Pedro Brand municipality staged a resolute protest Saturday against the plannedโค construction of a solid waste treatment plant inโข their area. Demonstrators blocked rural roads, lit tires, and felled trees, vowing to continue their actions indefinitely until authorities halt the project.
The contestedโฃ location is a vitalโค ecological corridor connectingโฃ natural reserves, encompassing river sources, wetlands, and forested areas thatโ provide habitat for protected โspecies. Situated โnear the Ozama Wetlandsโ National Park and the green belt of Greater Santo Domingo, the region โฃalsoโค boasts growing ecotourism potentialโค with natural spas and hikingโข trails.
Protesters fear the plant-whether a landfillโ or recycling facility-will disrupt the environmental balance, contaminate groundwater, damage soils, andโ negatively impact local biodiversity. They assert that previous peaceful appealsโค have been ignored and criticize a lack of openness and public consultation surrounding the project.
“The environmental impact would be devastating forโ thousands of families in Pedroโข Brand and neighboring areas,” said a community spokesperson. Residents have rejectedโค any negotiation that would allow the installation to proceed in โits โcurrent proposed location.
Community members areโฃ urgently calling โon the Ministry of the Surroundings, the Pedro Brand City Council, โthe Dominican Municipal League, and solid โฃwaste regulatory bodies to release comprehensive environmental impact โstudies, disclose projected waste volumes, and relocate the โinitiative to a more suitable geographical area to safeguard the region’s ecological value.
