Chicago Councilwoman Jessie Fuentesโฃ Arrested During ICE Operation at Health Center
Chicago โCouncilwoman Jessie Fuentes wasโ arrested and handcuffed by federal immigration โagents while observing an operationโ at a healthโ centerโค in the โขcity’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, the heart of Chicago’s Puerto rican community.
Fuentesโข whent to the health installation after receiving reports of โan Immigrationโค and Customs Enforcement โ(ICE) operation taking place within theโฃ facility. โAccording to reports, agents were searching โขfor โa โฃmanโ being treated forโฃ a โbroken โleg. Health center directors statedโฃ they denied agents access to patient treatment areas, โallowing access โonly to the emergency room.
Fuentes described theโ encounter as “violence,” stating โsheโ was physically restrained. ICE agents claimed Fuentes interfered โwith their โฃwork, however, video footage of โthe incident does not โappear to support this claim.
The arrestโ sparked immediate condemnation from local and federal officials. Democratic Congresswoman delia โขRamรญrez, representing the Puerto Rican neighborhood in the House of Representatives, stated, “ICE is out of control.It operates with impunity, โoutside โคthe limits of the law. It is trampling ourโ rights. It is indeed terrifying our communities.”
The Power4Puerto Rico association released aโ statement asserting โFuentes was subjected โฃto โ”physical violence โsponsored by the State” and arrested “without a court order โor โขjustification at the hands of โคICE agents.” The โorganization emphasized Fuentes’ consistent advocacy against injustice and her role inโ defending the Puerto Ricanโข community.
Fuentes also noted an increased presence โคof federal agents in the neighborhood on the dayโค of her arrest,includingโค reports of tear gas deploymentโฃ near a local Home Depot.
