Times Square: The Fight Over a Casino and Broadway’s Future

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 19, 2025
written by David Harrison – Chief Editor

Times Square⁣ Casino Plan Defeated, Preserving Broadway‘s Home Base

NEW ⁢YORK, NY – A proposal to construct a casino, hotel, and entertainment complex in the heart of Times Square has been rejected by‌ a New York State ‌advisory⁢ commitee, ⁤effectively halting the plan spearheaded by SL‍ Green Realty Corporation,‍ Caesars⁤ Entertainment, roc Nation (Jay-Z), and Live Nation. The committee⁢ voted 4-2 against ‌the⁣ project on April 15,⁣ 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The proposed growth would have occupied 1515 Broadway, currently the site of the ⁢Viacom building and the Minskoff Theater, home to the long-running Broadway production The Lion King.Proponents argued the casino would generate jobs and revenue,‌ but local residents and advocates voiced concerns about the potential impact on existing businesses, increased traffic, and the overall character of ‍Times Square.

Times Square‌ has undergone meaningful conversion over the decades, initially spurred by initiatives like $1 leases offered by Rudy Giuliani to attract⁤ businesses. While the‌ area has become a major⁣ tourist destination, ⁢many feel ‍it⁤ has lost much of its original character, increasingly populated by chain stores. Opponents of the ‍casino feared it would further displace⁢ smaller, family-owned businesses unable to compete with a large-scale casino resort.

Despite this ⁢victory for ⁣preservationists, New York City is not entirely out of the running for a casino. Steve Cohen, ⁢owner of the New York Mets, is pursuing a separate proposal to build a casino in Queens, near Citi ⁣field.

The decision ‌to reject the Times Square casino underscores the importance placed on preserving the area’s unique identity, especially its thriving Broadway theater district. as one observer noted, Times Square “is mainly home to ‍Broadway,” and the theaters offer “a ‍special kind of magic” that shoudl not be compromised.

Movie Box Office Trends: Why Long Legs Are Saving Theaters

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 19, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

“Great Legs” Prove Vital as Box ‍Office Rebuilds in 2025

LOS ANGELES‌ – A⁤ surprising trend is reshaping the 2025 box office landscape: films demonstrating ‌strong “legs” – sustained audience ‍interest over weeks – ⁢are driving ‌a remarkable industry recovery. While initial weekend numbers remain‌ crucial, the ability of movies to maintain viewership is proving⁣ crucial for profitability, defying earlier predictions of⁤ a post-pandemic box office slump. This shift signals a rebuilding filmgoing ⁢culture where word-of-mouth and repeat viewings ‌are once⁢ again ‍powerful forces.

The success of films with strong ”legs” is particularly evident in unexpected‍ places. Reboots‍ initially slated for streaming have significantly outperformed expectations. Disney’s “Freakier Friday” earned nearly $150 million domestically,⁤ while the live-action “Lilo & Stitch (2025)” remake grossed $423 million domestically – both exceeding internal ‍projections ‍given their original direct-to-streaming ‍plans. These results demonstrate studios ‍can unlock ⁤significant revenue ‍by opting for theatrical releases even for projects initially ⁣conceived for streaming platforms.

Beyond reboots, a wider variety of ‌genres are finding success through sustained audience engagement. two R-rated horror films, “Weapons”⁣ and “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” ⁣broke into the top⁤ 10 domestic summer box office earners.A24’s romantic dramedy ”Materialists” has surpassed $100 million globally. This indicates audiences are embracing diverse‍ content when it resonates and maintains appeal ⁤beyond opening weekend.

Though, not all blockbusters thrived. Pixar’s “Elio” and⁣ “Mission: Unachievable – The Final Reckoning” experienced setbacks, with the latter earning $600 million ‍globally but falling short of its $800 million breakeven ⁣point due ‍to⁣ a $400 million production budget. Despite these losses, the overall trend points toward a revitalized filmgoing⁤ experience, ⁤with studios finding ways ‍to monetize streaming content through theatrical releases and audiences demonstrating a willingness to return to cinemas for films that capture ‌their attention and hold it.

“The Pitt” and “The studio” Reign Supreme at‍ 75th Emmy Awards

los Angeles, CA – In a night of surprises and heartfelt acceptance speeches, HBO’s ‌gripping medical drama,⁤ “The Pitt,” took home the coveted award for Outstanding Drama Series‍ at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. ‌The win was a notable upset, besting the heavily favored “Severance,” a critically acclaimed series exploring the complexities of corporate life.Apple TV+’s sharp satire,”The Studio,” was crowned Outstanding Comedy Series.

The ceremony, held in ⁢Los Angeles, saw several ⁣first-time Emmy winners celebrated. Notably, Noah Wyle, best known for ⁣his ‌long-running role on “ER,” finally secured his first Emmy ⁤for his performance in “The Pitt.” Visibly moved, wyle⁣ dedicated ‍his award to the tireless dedication of healthcare professionals. “To anyone going on shift or coming off⁢ shift tonight, thank you for being in that job,” he said.

Colbert, ever the professional, expressed gratitude to the ⁣network while subtly acknowledging the situation with a pre-award joke: “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?”

Netflix’s ⁤dark and compelling limited series, “Adolescence,” earned the title of Outstanding Limited Series, with a groundbreaking win for 15-year-old Owen cooper, who became the youngest ever recipient of the award for Outstanding ⁤Supporting Actor⁤ in‌ a Limited Series. Daniel Day-Lewis Returns to Big Screen: First Role in Eight Years

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 12, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Daniel Day-Lewis is clarifying his previous statements about retiring from acting as he prepares for his return to the⁢ screen⁣ in the upcoming‍ film “Anemone,”⁣ co-written with and starring his son, Ronan. The notoriously selective actor, who announced his retirement in 2017, revealed he hoped declaring⁤ he ‌was⁢ finished would prevent future enticements, but ultimately ‍returned to filmmaking‌ for this project.

Day-Lewis, a three-time Academy Award winner, previously expressed feeling “hollowed out” by aspects of the acting profession despite his enduring love for the work itself. He explained that the lifestyle surrounding acting was the source of his discomfort, a feeling‌ that persisted even as ⁤recently as his initial retirement proclamation.”There’s something about that process that left me feeling hollowed out at the ‌end of it,” he said, according ⁤to USA Today.‍

“Anemone,” set for release October 3,explores “the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and ⁢brothers, and the dynamics of familial ⁢bonds,” according to Focus Features. The film also stars Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. day-Lewis joked⁢ about⁢ his return, stating,‍ “just shows I’m not as proud as I like to think I am!”

The Long Walk: A Disturbing Twist on King’s Dystopian Classic

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 12, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

‘The ⁣Long Walk‘ Film Delivers Shocking Ending, Subverting⁣ Source Material and Sparking Debate

Los Angeles, CA – ⁤The film ‌adaptation of Stephen ‍King’s The Long Walk ‍ has concluded with a dramatically altered ‌ending ⁤that ‍departs substantially from the novel, leaving audiences stunned and prompting discussion about its thematic implications. While the ⁣book sees Ray Garraty‍ emerge as the sole survivor, haunted and endlessly walking, the film presents‍ a far⁣ more vengeful conclusion,‌ challenging conventional notions of hope and ⁤forgiveness in the face of systemic cruelty.

The film diverges ⁣most sharply in the final moments⁢ of ⁣the‍ Walk. In ⁣the source material, Pete McCormick chooses‍ to ⁣stop, sacrificing himself to allow Ray to continue. ⁤The ⁤film⁤ reverses this⁣ dynamic: Ray stops, professing his love for ⁣Pete before being executed. However, the true shock comes with Pete’s subsequent wish fulfillment. Instead of‍ requesting a life of peace, as planned, Pete demands a carbine, instantly using it to kill the Major – the architect of the‍ Long ‌Walk ⁤-‍ and ⁤then disappearing‌ into‍ the⁤ night. This reversal positions Pete as an agent ⁤of retribution, ⁣while ray ultimately chooses self-sacrifice to perhaps save his friend.

This bold shift initially ⁢appears to contradict the novel’s‍ core theme of maintaining humanity in ⁤extreme circumstances.Though, according to a recent analysis by Vulture,‌ the‍ film ultimately arrives at a more complex message. The strong emotional bond between Ray and Pete is central to their survival, but ‍the ⁣film argues that ⁢a purely hopeful ⁢or forgiving ending woudl feel disingenuous, ⁢particularly given the ⁣current socio-political climate.

The timing‍ of the film’s release, coinciding with heightened debate surrounding political ‌violence, is noteworthy, though the filmmakers have indicated they did not intend to directly‍ engage with these conversations. Nevertheless, the ending reflects a “bleak yet honest” ⁣assessment ‌of ‍a world where⁣ systemic oppression can create monsters, and love alone ‍is insufficient to overcome it.

As the⁤ film portrays, “There is ⁤a point at which…it is no longer‌ possible⁣ to face suffering and oppression‍ with‍ dignity.” The ending is presented not as a ⁢validation ‌of Pete’s earlier ideals of ⁤camaraderie, but as⁢ an acknowledgement of the limitations of simply “choosing love.” The film echoes a sentiment from the‍ novel – “Everyone loses” the⁢ Long Walk – extending that ‍loss to include those in power. Pete’s final‌ act, while a betrayal of his initial principles, is framed as a necessary act of defiance, ensuring that if no‍ one ⁣can truly win, the Major will not either.
