Virus Collocations: Adjectives & Verbs to Use with “Virus”

Health officials are observing an increase in patients presenting with multiple respiratory viruses simultaneously, a phenomenon known as co-infection, according to data released this week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tracking a range of respiratory illnesses beyond COVID-19, influenza, and RSV, noting that these viruses can cause conditions ranging from mild colds to more severe pneumonia and bronchitis. The CDC’s data, updated February 20, 2026, indicates that common human coronaviruses are circulating year-round, with activity typically peaking in the fall and winter months.

Experts at Baystate Health in Massachusetts have confirmed the rise in co-infections, defining them as instances where a person is infected with two or more viruses – such as COVID-19, influenza, or RSV – at the same time. Dr. Armando Paez, chief of the Infectious Disease Division at Baystate Health, stated that co-infections are “a growing concern” for both adults and children. Patients with these multiple infections are experiencing more severe symptoms and are more likely to require hospitalization, oxygen support, or intensive care than those with a single infection.

Certain populations are particularly vulnerable to the complications of co-infection. Young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe outcomes. The CDC notes that pneumonia and bronchitis caused by human coronaviruses are more common in people with cardiopulmonary disease and infants.

Research published in Nature highlights the complex interactions between respiratory viruses, demonstrating both antagonistic and synergistic effects. These interactions can alter viral prevalence within populations, impact replication within hosts and cells, and ultimately affect the severity of disease. The study emphasizes the need to understand these mechanisms to develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Although vaccination against influenza and COVID-19 may not fully prevent infection, health officials emphasize that it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness, particularly in cases of co-infection. A systematic review of COVID-19 and respiratory virus co-infections underscores the importance of vaccination for high-risk groups, given that both COVID-19 and influenza share similar vulnerable populations.

The overall impact of respiratory virus co-infections on morbidity and mortality remains unclear, and further research is needed to fully assess the burden on healthcare systems in the coming seasons.
