Monash โIVF โHalts Donor Treatments in NSW Amid Record Review
Sydney, NSW – โMonash IVF has paused all donor conception treatmentsโข at its New South Wales โclinics โขas it โฃundertakes a comprehensive review of patient records following recent embryo mix-up โขincidents. The suspension, announced today, impacts at โleast 50 families or women undergoing treatment, sparking widespread distress and calls for greaterโ regulation of the fertility industry.
The move comes after Monash IVF publicly apologised forโ two separate embryo mix-ups earlier โthis year – one in Brisbane and another inโฃ Melbourne. In one case, a patientโค was mistakenly implantedโ with โanother woman’s embryo and afterward gave birth to a โขchild with no genetic link to her. A second incident involved a patient receiving her own embryo instead of her partner’s, as originally planned.โ
“It’s very distressing. Peopel are โnow questioning everything โฆ [and saying] ‘I thought I was going to a professional industry that’s highly regulated,'” said one affected woman,โข who wished to remain anonymous. “They’re all unsure and don’t understand how โขit โขcouldn’tโค be โฃregulated.”
Monash IVF confirmed that โขfamilies who have alreadyโ used donated material โฃresultingโค in the โคbirth โฃof โคa child โwill not be impacted โคand โขcan continue treatment. the company stated the review is a precautionary measure to ensure the accuracy andโ integrity of its processes.
Australia’s IVF industry is experiencing rapid growth, with overโฃ 100,000 treatment โcycles occurring annually. The recentโข incidents have intensified scrutiny of the sector, โprompting โdemands for increased transparency and simplifiedโ regulations to prevent similar errors in theโฃ future.โ
Monash IVF’s declaration follows a period โof important turmoilโ forโข the company, including โคan ASX announcement regarding the incorrectโข embryo transfer in Clayton, Melbourne, on โJune 10th. The โcompany is cooperating withโ relevant authorities during the review process.
