Designer John Romero and programmer John Carmack, famous developers and two of the founders of the no less famous studio id Software, have been at odds for a long time, the whole internet knows that, right? Except that wasn’t quite the case, as Romero detailed in his excellent autobiography Doom Guy: Life in First Person, which appeared on foreign markets this summer. Not only this book proves that Romero and Carmack were by no means the sworn enemies that years of internet speculation, half-truths and fabrications have made them out to be.

Romero of course from id Software after completing the first part of the Quake series from 1996 he didn’t leave because he just got out of bed on the wrong foot this morning. In the management of the studio that gave us classics like Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D and of course DOOMwas happening at the time he was born Quake, to various and undoubtedly serious disagreements and problems. The reason for which was usually the simple fact that the company, which in many sectors of the game industry at the time sought to be first and push the boundaries, and which very quickly achieved star status, was led by guys who were in their early 20s. But after Romero’s departure, the two creators remained friends and they are still friends today.

If someone doesn’t want to believe it, they will soon an opportunity to see what the relationship between Carmack and Romero is currently. The developers who were at the birth of the FPS genre as we know it today, they meet December 10/2023 live on John Romero’s Twitch channel. The reason for such a meeting is simple – that very day DOOM celebrates a respectable 30th birthday.

First released in the form of a shareware version that offered players the entire first episode of the game for free, DOOM can without a doubt be called one of the most influential and historically important video games of all time. And it’s no exaggeration to say that with its release, not only the genre of first-person shooters, but also the entire game industry changed forever. A meeting of two creators without whom DOOM would not existis certainly a more than appropriate way to celebrate 30 years since such a landmark event.

The live broadcast will be moderated by a documentarian, director and screenwriter David L. Craddockby the way, won’t be the only major part of the original DOOM’s 30th birthday celebration. On 12/10, John Romero intends to release SIGIL 2, the unofficial sixth episode of the game, which he has been personally preparing for some time. And which is, of course, to build on the success of the first SIGIL from 2019.

A collection of nine single-player and deathmatch levels for free download in the form of a .WAD file, which you only need a registered copy of DOOM to run, i.e. The Ultimate DOOM. Alternatively, you can in e-shopu studio Romero Games to pay a significant 6.66 euros for the version with a soundtrack by an artist with the nickname Buckethead. The original SIGIL can also be found among the addons that can be downloaded directly from the main menu of the latest, improved edition of DOOM and DOOMu 2which you will find from 2019 on PC, consoles and mobiles.

Will SIGIL 2 eventually follow the same path? This probably depends only on the person who is responsible for the selection of addons suitable for the new release at id Software. In any case, Romero himself intends to treat his novelty similarly to its predecessor. From December 10, every fan will therefore be able to purchase a version with a soundtrack, this time by a composer with the nickname Thorr, for 6.66 euros.

It will also be available around such an important date the free version which gives you the same as the paid ones except Thorr’s music. So nine single player levels, two maps for Deathmatch and a MIDI soundtrack from James Paddocka, all wrapped up in a .WAD file, which of course requires a legal and full version of DOOM/The Ultimate DOOM. Particularly ardent fans can pre-order one of the boxed collector’s editions in Romero’s e-shop. But we have to point out to fans of retro gaming that both boxes, which also include SIGIL 2 on a functional diskette, are already sold out.

Anyway, John Carmack on Twitter regarding the upcoming stream statedthat earlier there was talk that id Software’s existing studio would also organize something as part of DOOM’s 30th birthday celebrations, which, by the way, Carmack himself left in 2013. Ultimately, however, it was to come to nothing. Unfortunately, he didn’t offer more details, but we’ll have to make do with the live stream on Twitch anyway.

But we believe that id Software or the publisher Bethesda Softworks will not miss such an event and organize something. If nothing else, someone at Microsoft, which owns id Software, Bethesda, and parent company ZeniMax Media, will certainly not be forgiven for reminding them that DOOM is currently part of the Xbox family. Which, with Microsoft’s current approach to Bethesda’s portfolio, means that if we ever see another full-fledged DOOM, console owners from Sony and Nintendo will likely have to lose their appetite. At the same time, in connection with the original from 1993, the effort of fans to get the game working on all imaginable and unimaginable platforms and devices is almost a sporting discipline. So whatever comes of the official way in December, we’ll be able to enjoy SIGIL 2, listen to the reunion of two development legends and think about what else good old DOOM could run on. And that’s actually quite a nice prospect.
