Victor Wembanyama intends to bring a renewed competitive edge to the NBA All-Star Game, emphasizing energetic play and ball movement, according to remarks made during today’s media sessions.
“Exclamation-point plays, playing in a solid manner and sharing the ball with energy,” Wembanyama stated, as reported by ESPN. “If you share that energy, people feel like they have a responsibility to share it back to you.”
The San Antonio Spurs forward is participating in his second consecutive All-Star Game, and will be a member of the World team in the newly formatted competition. This year’s All-Star Game will feature a round-robin competition consisting of four 12-minute games, with the top two teams advancing to a final match. This marks the fourth different format the All-Star Game has utilized in the last four years.
Wembanyama expressed optimism about the new format, stating, “I’m confident in the way it’s going to go.”
Elsewhere in the Spurs organization, rookie Carter Bryant narrowly missed winning Saturday’s Slam Dunk Contest. Despite receiving perfect scores of 50 from all judges on his first dunk of the final round – a between-the-legs slam off the bounce – Bryant was unable to connect on a more ambitious reverse slam off the backboard on his final attempt, and opted for a safer dunk to conclude his performance. “If I set that dunk down, I win it,” Bryant told The San Antonio Express-News. “That’s probably the dunk I’ve made the most out of all the dunks I did today in my life. I’ve been doing that dunk since I’ve been 14. Just didn’t get the ball. Didn’t roll my way.”
Ron Harper Sr., participating in the Shooting Stars event alongside his sons Ron Harper Jr. And Dylan Harper, voiced his satisfaction with Dylan’s placement with the Spurs. While acknowledging that Dylan, selected as the No. 2 pick in the draft, might have been afforded a larger role on other teams, Harper Sr. Believes San Antonio provides a beneficial environment for his development. “I consider the Spurs are a first-class place,” Harper Sr. Said. “He has a chance to learn the ball game and play with some very good basketball players there. And if they keep continuing to build as a basketball club, they will have a chance.”
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, who earned a spot in the All-Star Game and will coach the Stripes team on Sunday, has fostered a strong bond with his players, according to reports. Julian Champagnie stated, “We’d run through walls for him the same way he’d run through walls for us.”
