Student Social Media Use High, โขBut Doesn’t โคGuarantee Online Safety: Experts Warn of Rising Fraud
HANOI,โ VIETNAM -โ A new nationwide survey reveals Vietnamese students are overwhelmingly active on โsocial media, โคyetโข experts caution that high usage doesn’t equate to โฃonline โขsafety, particularly considering recent โfraud โฃcases. The survey, conducted among 26,300 studentsโค across theโ country, found 97.8%โ use Facebook and 97% useโ Zalo, with meaningfulโค adoption of โInstagram (84.7%) and TikTok (85.6%).
Theโข study โhighlights a pervasive โขintegration of social media into student life, withโ 85.1%โ identifying it asโ a daily โactivity.Entertainmentโฃ is the primary driverโ for this usage, โcitedโ by 91.4% of respondents, followedโฃ by dialogueโ with friends and family, self-expression, and imageโ building. However, this widespread engagement coincides withโ increasing vulnerability to online scams, prompting concern from cybersecurity professionals.
Vu Ngoc Son, โขTechnology and International Cooperation Manager at the โขnational Cyber โSecurity Association, emphasized a critical โdistinction: “Knowing how to useโค technology” and possessing “digital security capabilities” are fundamentally different. He โexplained that preventative warnings oftenโฃ fall โshort because victims becomeโ isolated โขduring scams, cutting offโค opportunities for โฃexternalโข intervention.
Son further noted that criminals โขexploit trust by fabricating credible signals โค- โmimicking official documents, institutions, and organizations – to disguise malicious intent within seemingly legitimate messaging. he stressed the needโ to bolster digital security skills and โฃprioritize verification before acting on online information, advocating forโ a “stop, think,โฃ verify” approach โto technology use.
