Germany Seeks โคApprovalโฃ for Major Defense Purchases, Including Eurofightersโ and Taurusโ Missile Upgrade
BERLIN – โThe Germanโ governmentโ is preparing too โrequest parliamentary approval for approximately 80 defense projects before the end of โthe year, โฃa document reviewed by Reuters reveals. keyโ amongโข these are plans to โฃacquire additional Eurofighter jets and modernize the Taurus cruise missile โsystem, signaling a continued investment in bolsteringโค Germany’s military capabilities.
The list of 81 projects, each exceeding a โฌ25 million ($29 million)โค threshold,โข requires review by the parliament’s budget committee. A notable component of โคthe โคplanned acquisitions is theโค “Tranche 5” order of โคEurofighterโค jets, which formerโข Chancellor Olaf Scholz previously indicated would include 20 aircraft manufactured โขby Airbus.
Alongside the Eurofighter purchase, Germany intendsโ to upgrade its existing Taurus โขcruise missileโ arsenal. Thisโ includes establishingโข a production line for theโฃ next-generation Taurus NEO,an advanced version of the โweapon system. Defense Minister boris โPistorius previously announced a goal to develop this advanced โversion and procure โข600 units.
Currently, the German military possesses 600 of the existing Taurus missiles, capable โฃof reaching targets over 500โ kilometersโค (311 miles) when launched from โaircraft like the Tornado, F-15, and F/A-18. โฃDeveloped by the European defense โcompany MBDA, the Taurus is designed to โstrike high-value targets deep within enemy territory, including command centers, ammunition depots, โand critical infrastructure โlikeโ airfields and โฃbridges.
The broader list also encompasses the acquisition of Patriot and IRIS-T SLM โฃmissileโข systems, Puma infantry fighting vehicles, โขBoxer armored personnelโค carriers, and Heron TP drones, among other โdefenseโฃ assets.
This move comes after Germany temporarily halted arms exports to Israelโข in August, specifically those potentially usedโค inโ the Gaza Strip, due to concerns over the planned expansion of โขIsraeli operationsโฃ in the region.
The documentโ does not detail theโ specific quantities โof each system to be purchased, the โคassociated costs,or โthe full list โขof manufacturersโ involved.($1 = 0.8542 euros)
