Bezos’ Turtle Post: A Dig at Musk’s Shift to Lunar Focus?

Jeff Bezos appeared to subtly mock Elon Musk on social media this week, posting an image of a tortoise to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, just hours after Musk announced a shift in SpaceX’s strategic focus toward lunar missions.

The black-and-white image, posted without accompanying text, quickly drew speculation from users who interpreted it as a reference to the classic fable of the tortoise and the hare. The story, in which the slow and steady tortoise ultimately wins a race against the faster but overconfident hare, was widely seen as a commentary on the contrasting approaches of the two billionaire entrepreneurs to space exploration.

Musk responded to Bezos’ post with a series of replies. “Heading towards the tortoise?” he wrote, followed by, “While he slowly but surely emerges.”

The exchange comes as both Bezos and Musk have publicly outlined ambitious visions for the future of space travel. Musk, long a proponent of establishing a self-sustaining colony on Mars, announced on Wednesday that SpaceX would prioritize the Moon as a more immediate goal. This marked a significant change in direction for Musk, who has previously emphasized the importance of becoming a “multi-planetary species” with Mars as the primary destination.

Bezos, through his company Blue Origin, has consistently advocated for a phased approach to space colonization, beginning with the development of lunar infrastructure. As early as 2019, Bezos argued that returning to the Moon was a necessary stepping stone, stating, “It’s time to go back to the Moon – this time to stay,” and offering Blue Origin’s support for NASA’s Artemis program. He has maintained that robots should be utilized for dangerous or cost-prohibitive tasks on the lunar surface, rather than risking human lives.

The subtle back-and-forth between the two billionaires follows a more direct critique from Musk in November 2025, when he labeled Bezos a “copycat” following reports that Bezos would co-lead Project Prometheus, a new $6.2 billion artificial intelligence startup. Bezos’s venture into AI represents his first major company role since stepping down as CEO of Amazon.

Both Bezos and Musk, along with OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have expressed optimistic views on the potential of technology to improve humanity’s future. Bezos, speaking at Italian Tech Week 2025, stated, “I don’t see how anybody can be discouraged who is alive right now,” predicting that millions of people will be living in space by 2045.
