UN Climate Summit to Focus on Strengthening โฃNational Climate Pledges
NEW YORK โ- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterresโ will convene a Climate Summit โin Newโ York on September 24th, during the UN General Assembly, with a central goal of accelerating climate action and โbolstering countries’ Nationally Steadfast Contributions (NDCs) under theโ Paris Agreement. Finland will be represented at theโค summit by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.
The summitโ arrives at a critical juncture asโข global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degreesโ Celsius face increasing challenges. Minister Multala emphasizedโ theโ need for greater ambition, notablyโค from major economies, stating, “more โคenterprising measures will be needed especiallyโ in large economies inโ orderโ thatโ we do not lose sight of โthe targets set in the Parisโ Agreement.” She โalso highlighted the importance of theโฃ European Union updatingโฃ its contributions ahead of the upcomingโ Climate Conference in Belรฉm.
EU environment and โclimate ministers reached a consensus inโ Brussels on Thursday,outlining a commitment to โขreduce emissions by 66.25-72.5% by 2035. โThe EU โintends to finalize updated NDCs before the Belรฉm conference, fulfilling the Paris Agreement’s โrequirement for parties to revise their climate pledgesโ every five years – with the nextโข submissions due prior toโฃ COP30.
Finland’s delegation to UN General Assembly week will be ledโข by โขPresident Alexander Stubb, with Minister multala joined by Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Growth Ville Tavio, and Minister โof Social Security Sanni Grahn-Laasonen as deputy heads.
Minister Multala’s participation extends beyond the main summit,encompassing events focused on the โenergy transition,carbonโข capture technologies,and the Arctic’s โrole in climate โchange.She will also participate โคin a high-level dialog addressingโ preparedness forโ climate-related natural disasters and extreme whether.
Prior to the summit, Multala will join the High Ambition Coalition, โcontributing to a joint declaration supporting preparations for COP30. Bilateral meetings with international leaders and organizations are also โคplanned, where she will promote Finnish climate solutions and explore export opportunities.
