Shelton, CT – Raul Valle, acquitted of murder adn assaultโข charges in the 2022 โคstabbing death of James McGrath and injuries to three others, willโ face a new trial on lesserโข charges wiht newly retained legal โcounsel. The Milford Judicial District Clerk’s Office issued a summons to Valle on Sept. 23, requiring hisโ appearance in court on Oct. 15, 2025.
Valle,โฃ 16 at the time of the โฃincident โฃand โฃa student at St. Josephโ High School, was involved in a fight at a house party on Laurel Glen Drive in Shelton on May 14, 2022,โ resulting in the โdeath โof Fairfield Prep student James McGrath โand injuries to Ryan Heinz, Thomas โคConnery Jr.,โ and Faison Teele. He previouslyโ testifiedโ he acted โฃin self-defense, stating he was “terrified,” “scared and surrounded.”
A jury trial concluded July โค9 with Valle found not guilty of murder,โ two โขcounts of โขfirst-degree assault, and one countโข of second-degree assault.โ Though, the jury โขwas unable to reach verdicts on โcharges ofโ reckless first-degree manslaughter inโ McGrath’s death, reckless first-degree assault in the โstabbings of Heinz and Connery, and second-degree reckless assault in Teele’sโ stabbing, โleading to a mistrial on those counts. The jury foreman revealed in aโ post-verdict interviewโ that self-defense was not a central topic of deliberation, and jurors were reportedly voting 11-1 โคin favor of conviction on the manslaughter and assault chargesโ when โdeliberations ended.
Valle was initiallyโ represented by attorney โขRichard Smith, who discussed the case at meetings not involvingโฃ Valle. Following the conclusion of โคSmith’s portrayal,Valle โฃwas left without counsel, prompting the court to directly summon him. the court’s โletter states, “Like any individual with an assigned court date, youโข mayโ represent โyourself, or have a private attorney present to act on your behalf.” it โalso warns of a potential โarrest warrant for failure to appear. A man at the addressโข listed on the court summons declined to comment when approached Friday afternoon. There were no bond conditionsโ associated with the amended charges.
