The Boston Celtics have made a strategic roster move, waiving guard JD Davison to get under the NBA’s second apron, according to Brian Robb of MassLive. This decision saves the team approximately $1.9 million and brings their roster to 14 players.
Operating below the second apron provides the Celtics with increased financial versatility, allowing them to include cash in future trades, aggregate player salaries, and begin the process of making their 2032 first-round draft pick available for trade. Boston will regain the ability to trade this pick once they remain under the second apron for three consecutive seasons.
The timing of Davison’s release also facilitated his move to the Houston Rockets on a two-way contract, reuniting him with former Celtics head coach Ime Udoka.
