Wrongfully Accused: Attorney Details Fallout forโ Man Charged inโ Horizon Cityโ Teen’sโข Death
After charges โขwere dismissed against โฃhimโ in April, the attorneyโฃ for an el Paso man accused in the death of 17-year-old Miguel Angel Romero is โคspeaking โout โaboutโ the devastating consequences his client faced during the legal proceedings. Romero, a student at Horizon High School, was struck and killed while using a crosswalk on โขDarrington Road in Horizon City.
The man, whose name has not been widely released, was initially โขarrested hours after the crash โbased on witness accounts describing a red truck โฃfleeing โขthe scene. Though,El Pasoโข District Attorney James Montoyaโ announced โฃthe dismissal โof all charges, citing a lack of evidence. Forensic analysis revealedโ a blood alcohol level of zero for the man, eliminating the basis for charges of intoxication manslaughter,โ DWI,โ or felony-murder.
“Evenโค though Mr. Solis was initially โฃarrested on suspicion of โintoxication manslaughter, forensic analysis of his โblood revealedโ no alcohol in his system. Inโ thisโ very โฃway, there was no factual basis to โcontinue prosecuting him for โDWI, intoxication manslaughter, or felony-murder,” Montoya stated.
Montoya explainedโค that the initialโ arrest stemmed from aโ “perfect storm” of circumstances that created probable cause, but a deeper investigation revealedโ inconsistencies. Crucially, evidence emerged showing discrepancies between the suspect vehicle and the man’s truck. Montoya presented images of the vehicle fleeing the scene, noting it โขhad a white racing stripe and lacked a decalโ above โthe rear tire present on โthe man’s brighter โred truck.
The dismissal has left Romero’s familyโ deeply frustrated and โseeking answers. At a press conference, Romero’s mother expressed confusion over shifting narratives โfrom authorities, stating, “First, they told us one thing, then they changed prosecutors, and theyโข told us another, and now they tellโฃ us yet another thing. We don’tโ know who toโ listenโ toโฆas โฃreally this shouldn’t end likeโ this, โa person died.”
Meanwhile, theโ man’sโข attorney, Wyatt, detailed the immense personal cost his client endured while facing the accusations. He lost his job, home, family, and reputation, and spent 11 months in custody. He also incurred notable legal and bail bond fees,โฃ and โultimately went through a divorce.”There’sโ someโข people thatโฃ no matter what are not โgonna beleive โคthat the wrong guyโค was arrested,” Wyatt โคsaid. He is โฃnow reviewing potential legal avenues to address the damages his client hasโ suffered.
The investigation into โRomero’sโ death remainsโข open as authorities continue โto search for the actualโ vehicle and driver โinvolved in the hit-and-run.
