Saint Petersburg, Russia – Russian customs officials have intercepted a 2.8-ton fragment of a meteorite that was being smuggled to the United Kingdom, disguised as a garden ornament. The discovery, announced Tuesday by the Federal Customs Service of Russia, has triggered a criminal investigation and raised questions about the illicit trade of space artifacts.
The fragment is believed to be part of the Aletai meteorite, one of the largest iron meteorites ever discovered on Earth. According to a statement from the customs service, the attempted export was detected during a routine inspection of a shipping container at the port of Saint Petersburg. The consignment was initially declared as a “landscape sculpture,” but closer examination revealed its true nature and significant value.
“When attempting to export it, it was declared as a landscape sculpture, but an examination determined that it was a fragment of the Aletai iron meteorite and its value is approximately 3.6 million euros,” the customs service stated. Video footage released by Russian authorities shows officials dismantling a wooden crate to reveal the grey, jagged rock.
Forensic analysis estimates the fragment’s value at 323 million rubles (approximately $70 billion Indonesian Rupiah). Russian authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the intended importer in the UK, only stating that the shipment was destined for that country.
The Aletai meteorite was first discovered in the Xinjiang region of China in 1898. Classified as a coarse octahedrite in chemical group IIIE-an, it is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years aged. The total mass of recovered fragments exceeds 74 tons, making it one of the largest meteorite finds globally. The strewn field, the area over which fragments are scattered, stretches at least 430 kilometers, making it the largest known meteorite debris scattering field on the planet, according to research on the meteorite.
The Russian customs service indicated the fragment had been brought into Russia from an unnamed country within the Eurasian Economic Union – a trade bloc that includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. The seizure comes amid heightened scrutiny of exports deemed strategically important by the Russian government.
The incident echoes a similar event last year, when a meteorite struck a home in Georgia, USA, drawing widespread attention. The Aletai meteorite, like the Georgia meteorite, is believed to originate from the core of a protoplanet or large asteroid that formed during the early stages of the solar system.
Russian authorities have opened a criminal case for “smuggling of goods and resources of strategic importance or cultural property,” which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released regarding potential suspects or motives.
