Harsewinkel Couple Raises Awareness & Funds for Illness

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 28, 2026
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

A three-year-old girl in Harsewinkel, Germany, has been diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare and devastating genetic disorder also known as children’s dementia, her grandparents announced this week.

Annelie and Leonhard Sieweke, of Marienfeld, are now seeking to raise awareness and funds to support research into the condition, which progressively destroys nerve cells in the brain and has no known cure. “Louisa has a rare hereditary disease, Sanfilippo syndrome,” the Siewekes stated, according to local news outlet die-glocke.de.

Sanfilippo syndrome is caused by a deficiency in an enzyme needed to break down long-chain sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans. These molecules accumulate in the brain, leading to a range of neurological problems, including developmental delays, seizures and loss of cognitive abilities.

The Siewekes’ efforts approach as they seek to highlight the challenges faced by families affected by rare diseases and the urgent need for increased research funding. They are appealing for donations to support organizations working to find treatments and ultimately a cure for Sanfilippo syndrome.

Leonhard Sieweke is also known for his work creating and maintaining a late medieval garden at the Kloster Marienfeld in Harsewinkel, a project begun in 2002. In 2018, he shared hop plants from the garden with the partner city of Mazsalaca in Latvia, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to community engagement and international collaboration.

The family’s announcement has prompted a wave of support from the local community in Gütersloh, with residents expressing their sympathy and offering assistance. Further details regarding fundraising initiatives and awareness campaigns are expected to be released in the coming days.

Gütersloh Traffic Lights: Can City Be Held Liable for Accidents?

by Priya Shah – Business Editor February 20, 2026
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Frequent failures of traffic lights on the B61 highway in Gütersloh, Germany, have led to multiple accidents, prompting questions about the liability of public authorities. The issue has persisted for months, raising concerns among residents and commuters.

According to reports from February 19, 2026, the malfunctioning signals are creating hazardous conditions for drivers. The question of whether the city of Gütersloh can be held legally responsible for accidents resulting from the failures is now being examined by legal experts.

Paul Potthoff, of the law firm Potthoff, Paul & Kollegen in Gütersloh, specializes in digital law and e-commerce, and is among those considering the legal ramifications of the situation. His firm advises clients on issues related to online shops, digital contracts, and consumer protection, but his expertise could be relevant to determining the extent of the city’s responsibility for maintaining functional traffic control systems.

A search of top-rated legal professionals in Gütersloh reveals several firms specializing in traffic law, including Jakobsmeier & Bröring Rechtsanwälte, which received a high rating from reviewers. However, no specific statements from these firms regarding the B61 traffic light issue were immediately available.

The legal basis for holding a public entity liable in such cases typically revolves around negligence – demonstrating that the authorities had a duty of care to maintain the traffic lights, that they breached that duty, and that this breach directly caused the accidents. Establishing a direct causal link between the malfunctioning lights and specific incidents will be crucial in any legal claim.

The city of Gütersloh has not yet issued a public statement addressing the potential for legal action or detailing plans to rectify the ongoing traffic light failures.

Bielefeld Theater Group Celebrates Milestone Anniversary | Anke Koster

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor February 16, 2026
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

The Movement Theater in Bielefeld will celebrate its 25th anniversary on February 21st, with founder Anke Koster transitioning leadership of the theater to Jochen Schlüter.

Koster, a recipient of the Bielefeld Cultural Prize, established the theater, which began in a space described as a former bakery “so groß wie eine Garage mit Platz für zwei Autos” (as large as a garage with space for two cars), according to Koster. The theater has since moved to Haller Weg 38, and is now considered a local institution.

For years, Koster has been the driving force behind the Movement Theater, fulfilling a multitude of roles, from playwright and director to actress and even maintenance staff. She described her operate as encompassing “Mal Klofrau, mal Intendantin” (“sometimes a cleaner, sometimes an artistic director”).

Schlüter is not recent to the Movement Theater, having previously performed at the original location while part of the duo Karinjo. Both Koster and Schlüter acknowledge the theater’s humble beginnings, and the need to move beyond the initial space.

The theater adapted to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic by shifting to digital performances, offering recordings of past shows and newly produced projects online. These digital offerings were made available for free, with a request for donations to support the artists and the theater itself.

Recent digital productions include a music video by Erkan Köroglu, comedy performances featuring “the King of Wattenscheid-Günnigfeld,” and readings by Christian Knäpper and Insa Stuckenbröker. A preview of a new crime drama, “Dienstreise nach Istanbul” (Business Trip to Istanbul), featuring Commissioner Knäpper, was also recently offered by Koster.

The Movement Theater’s 25th-anniversary celebration is scheduled for February 21st at the Haller Weg location.
