All schools and colleges in the Kashmir valley will be closed on Monday, March 2nd, as a precaution amid ongoing protests, Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced today.
The decision, communicated through the Kashmir News Service (KNS), aims to ensure the safety of students and staff, according to Itoo. Demonstrations have been reported across several areas following recent developments in West Asia, disrupting normal life in parts of the region.
Authorities have indicated they are closely monitoring the situation and will develop further decisions based on ground assessments. Security forces have been deployed to sensitive areas to maintain law and order, with senior police and civil administration officials actively reviewing the evolving circumstances.
Minister Itoo’s statement follows a period of increased scrutiny regarding the challenges of governing within a Union Territory, as she discussed in January, noting the difficulties inherent in her role. She previously emphasized the government’s commitment to local development during a cabinet meeting held in Pahalgam in May 2025, describing it as a “significant moment” for the region, according to KNS.
While acknowledging the disruptions, Itoo reiterated that Kashmir remains open to tourists, stating, “Kashmir is not about opening or closing. It is always open.”
The situation remains fluid, with authorities continuing to assess the need for further measures.
