Brussels Slaps Google with โฌ3โ Billion Fine Over Ad Tech Dominance
Brussels, September 5, 2025 – Theโ European Commission today imposed a fine โof nearly โฌ3 billion on Google, alleging โขthe tech giant violated competition rules in the online advertising market.Google hasโ announced itsโค intention to appeal,โ calling the penalty unlawful.
The Commission determined Google abusedโ its dominant market position by favoring โits own advertising platformsโค overโค competitors. Regulators require the company toโ implement measures preventing such preferential treatment.
“When marketsโ fail, โpublic institutions mustโค step in to prevent dominant players from abusing their power,” stated European Commissioner Teresaโ Ribera (competition) in a releasedโฃ statement. “Publishers, advertisers, and consumers are being harmed by โขthis.”
Lee-Anne Mulholland,โ head โขof Google’s regulations, countered that the Commission’s demandsโ woudl hinder the ability โขof thousands of European companiesโค to โฃgenerate revenue.
The decision arrives amid heightened transatlantic โtrade tensions. U.S. President โขDonald Trump has repeatedlyโ criticized whatโค he views as overlyโ strict regulations targeting American tech firms like Google, Meta,โ andโข Apple, and recently threatened new import duties on countries perceived to “discriminate” against them.
Reports surfaced earlier this week suggesting theโ Commission had delayed the fine due to concerns aboutโ jeopardizingโ the recently finalized EU-U.S. trade agreement. However, theโ Commission proceeded with the announcement today, raising questions about a potential response fromโฃ the โฃWhite House.
