Colo Colo vs La U: Security Plan for 2026 Superclásico at Monumental Stadium

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 24, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Authorities have confirmed a capacity of 42,000 attendees for the upcoming Superclásico between Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile on March 1st, 2026, at Estadio Monumental in Santiago, Chile. The decision follows a review of security protocols prompted by incidents involving Universidad de Chile supporters at a January 30th match against Audax Italiano.

The Metropolitan Regional Presidential Delegate, Gonzalo Durán, led a technical meeting on Tuesday with representatives from the municipalities of Macul, San Joaquín, and La Florida, as well as specialized units of the Carabineros (OS10 and OS13), and Blanco y Negro, the concessionaire administering Colo Colo. The meeting focused on ensuring a secure environment for the highly anticipated match, the first official Superclásico of the 2026 season.

“All necessary measures have been taken to prioritize the sporting spectacle above all else,” Durán stated, outlining a perimeter security ring manned by Carabineros to prevent unauthorized access to the stadium grounds. Inside the stadium, a reinforced contingent of private security guards, including tactical personnel, will oversee internal security and access points.

A key component of the security plan is the continued implementation of a turnstile system integrated with facial recognition technology, already utilized in the last three matches held at Estadio Monumental. Gustavo Poblete, Colo Colo’s Operations Manager, described the technology as part of a broader modernization effort aimed at improving the fan experience and ensuring full identification of those entering the stadium.

“Our fans, I believe, have understood and reacted positively to this issue,” Poblete said. “This is a joint effort, not just from the fans or Blanco y Negro, but also from the public sector. We believe in public-private collaboration to allow families to return to the stadium.”

Authorities also announced a special reinforcement of public transportation, including both surface routes and the Metro system, to facilitate access to and from the stadium, particularly for post-match evacuation. Increased train frequency is planned to accommodate the expected influx of attendees.

Durán clarified that no request or authorization has been granted for a pre-match “arengazo” – a traditional rallying of supporters. “As a delegation, we only authorize such activities when requested by the organizer, in this case Blanco y Negro, and conducted within the stadium. There is no such request, and therefore no authorization for an ‘arengazo’,” he stated.

The March 7th match between Audax Italiano and Colo Colo, scheduled for 9:00 PM UTC at Estadio Bicentenario Municipal de La Florida, will precede the Superclásico. As of February 24, 2026, Audax Italiano holds the 10th position in the Liga de Primera standings, even as Colo Colo is ranked 6th, according to Sofascore.

Portugal Storm Damage: PS Criticizes Government Response & Aid Levels

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 19, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Lisbon, Portugal – José Luís Carneiro, the Secretary-General of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS), has sharply criticized the current government’s response to recent severe weather events, alleging a lack of “sensitivity, and effectiveness.” Carneiro’s remarks, made during an interview with RTP on Wednesday, come as the country grapples with widespread damage and economic losses estimated at one billion euros in the agricultural sector alone.

According to Carneiro, local authorities have voiced complaints regarding the government’s slow response in restoring essential services like electricity and infrastructure. While the government has mobilized approximately 40 million euros in aid, Carneiro deemed the 10,000 euro assistance offered to families for home repairs “insufficient” to meet the scale of the needs. The PS proposes a tiered system where families could cover up to ten percent of their previous year’s income above the initial 10,000 euro grant, with the state covering any remaining costs. “These measures fall within the perimeter of state support,” Carneiro asserted.

The criticism follows the recent resignation of Maria Lúcia Amaral from her position as Minister of Internal Administration, a role Carneiro described as “one of the most difficult in the Government,” emphasizing the importance of political experience for the position.

Carneiro also expressed cautious approval of the appointment of Paulo Fernandes to lead the reconstruction efforts, noting his “proven ability to execute public policies.” However, he raised concerns about internal divisions within the government regarding financial support for recovery. He highlighted conflicting statements from the Minister of Economy, who advocated for increased aid, and the Minister of Finance, who reportedly took a more cautious stance. “I saw the Government with two positions and therefore it will be very key the position and clarification by the Prime Minister,” Carneiro stated.

The PS leader indicated his party is prepared to support measures ensuring adequate assistance to affected families, workers, businesses, and local authorities. He stressed the need for the government to clarify its financial position, adding, “We looked at the public accounts and from the beginning we understood that the Government needed to clarify these accounts.”

Carneiro leveled a strong accusation against the government, claiming it is prioritizing collaboration with the Chega party and its leader, André Ventura, over dialogue with the Socialist Party. He accused the government of “impreparatory politics” and a deliberate unwillingness to engage with the opposition. “The Government has shown that it does not want to dialogue with the Socialist Party and has opted for Chega and Dr. André Ventura,” he said. He warned that the Prime Minister “cannot and should not ignore the Socialist Party,” emphasizing the PS’s long-standing role in Portuguese democracy since 1976.

Carneiro attributed this perceived disregard to “insensitivity” and “arrogance,” suggesting that certain factions within the government are intentionally seeking to align with Chega. As of Thursday, the Prime Minister’s office has not issued a public response to Carneiro’s accusations.
