Man Jailed and Banned โfrom Animal Ownership Following Revelation of Neglected Dogs
Navan, Countyโ Meath โ- A man has been sentencedโ to three months in prison and disqualified from keeping animals for ten years after being โconvicted ofโค cruelty andโ neglect towardsโ ten dogs found in appalling conditions atโข his premises. The caseโ was heardโ at Navan District Court on January 26th,2024.
The defendant, identifiedโ as Brilly, pleaded guilty to six charges relating to the welfare of the animals. An examination wasโค launchedโ following a visit to the premisesโ by an official fromโข the Irish Society for โPreventionโ of โขcruelty โฃto โฃAnimals โ(ISPCA) and Meath County Council dog warden Alan โNolan.
Inspectors discovered a meaningful build-up of faeces and urine in allโข the โฃkennels, forcing the dogs to lie in unsanitary conditions. Theโฃ court heard that all the dogs were visibly underweight, with some exhibiting difficulty moving.Six of the dogs were unlicensed and only one was microchipped.โข Five kennels โwere overcrowded, and five had no water available, while four others contained dirtyโฃ water. Tragically, โone dog was found deceased and partially decomposed.
“Allโค of the dogs were ‘severely emaciated’,” the court was โขtold. โA veterinary expert’s report confirmed the dogs suffered โฃconsiderably due to inadequate care, lack of food and water, and inappropriate housing. Older dogs displayed anatomical โคabnormalities potentially linked to โnutritional deficiencies.โฃ Upon thier release by the ISPCA, the dogs reportedly “tried to lick โanything that had moisture in it.”
During the sentencing, Judge รirinn McKiernan described the case as “veryโ serious,”โค emphasizing the complete reliance โฃof the animals on their owner. She stated that the ill-treatment was “wholly and utterly unacceptable.”
The defenseโ lawyer explained that Brilly had entered a guilty plea early to reduce the burden on the โcourt and accepted full duty. He cited a concussion sustained in October following an incident while golfing – where a golf ball struck him off a steel barrier – and concurrent family issues as โcontributing factors to the โขdecline in animal care. Photographs were presented demonstrating โthe dogs had previously been well-maintained.
Despite the mitigating circumstances, Judge McKiernan imposed a three-month prison sentence, ordered โBrilly to pay costs of โฌ23,000, and issued a ten-year ban on owning animals.
