Colombian Senator Vows to Block Power Grab Amid constituent Assembly concerns
BOGOTÁ – Senator Mauricio Gómez Amín has publicly accused candidates from the Historical Pact coalition of seeking to remain in power through a proposed constituent assembly, vowing to prevent what he calls an attempt to “continue ending the country.” The declaration comes as the 2026 presidential election cycle gains momentum and the specter of a constitutional overhaul remains a contentious issue in Colombian politics.
“What do you want to perpetuate in power? … To continue ending the country? We will not allow them,” Gómez amín stated in a video posted to his social media accounts on September 9, 2025. The video highlights comments made by Historical Pact hopefuls Gustavo Bolívar, Daniel Quintero, Paloma Valencia, and Alfredo Saade regarding a potential constituent assembly.A constituent assembly-a body convened to rewrite a nation’s constitution-has been a frequent point of criticism leveled against the current government of Gustavo Petro by his political opponents. They fear such a move could fundamentally alter the structure of Colombian governance and concentrate power. Gómez Amín’s statement signals a firm opposition to any such efforts by candidates aligned with Petro’s political movement.
