SAN ANTONIO & HOUSTON, TX – A new film series,โฃ The Modern Era,โ will โขspotlight contemporary Latinx and Indigenous filmmakers and stories, launching this October โฃwiht screenings at both the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio and โas part of the Houston Cinema Arts โคFestival. The collaborative initiative aims to broaden portrayal in cinema and foster dialog around critical issues facing these communities.
The series, curated by Matthew โคDavila (Standing Rock โLakota Sioux), begins at the Briscoe Museum on october 4th with a screening of Gather, directed by sanjay โขRawal, a documentary exploring the resurgence of Native American food sovereignty. Subsequent screenings in San Antonio include lakota Nation vs. the United States (October 11), directedโข by Jesse Short Bull and Laura โTomaselli, and Thunderheart (November 15),โฃ starring Val Kilmer โand based on the story of activistโ Leonard Peltier. Each screening will beโข preceded byโฃ a presentation led by Davila. The Houston Cinema Arts Festival willโ host โคscreenings of the same films, dates to โbe announced.
The Modern Era arrives at a time when representation in film remains a significant concern. While strides have been made,Latinx and Indigenous filmmakers and stories โขareโ still often marginalized within the โindustry. This series provides a platform for these voices, offering audiences access to narratives that challenge conventional perspectives and celebrate cultural heritage.
