Purdue โBasketball โขDuo of Omer Mayer and Braden Smith Quickly โขForming โDynamicโข Partnership
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A burgeoning on-court connection between fifth-year transfer Omer Mayer and โฃsophomore braden smithโ is rapidly elevating Purdue basketball, offering a potent combination of scoring versatility and playmaking that teammates and coaches believe could be โpivotal to โtheโ Boilermakers’ championship aspirations.
Mayer, whoโ joined Purdue after โa professional career with Maccabi Tel-Aviv,and Smithโฃ are โcomplementing each other’sโฃ strengths, creating challengesโค for opposing defenses. A key element of this synergy involves utilizing Smithโค more effectively as an off-ball threat, unlockingโฃ additionalโ scoring โฃopportunities forโ both players and the entire Purdue offense.
“I think it’s โฃgoing to be big-time,” fifth-year bigโ man Trey Kaufman-Rennโค said. โ”He’s still learning the Purdue โsystem โฃ- especially with me in short rolls and making different โฃtypes of passes. But he’s already improved soโ much. Getting Braden off โthe โฃball as โขmuch as possible is โคgoing to be big. I think he’sโ one of the best point guards we’ve seen inโ collegeโ basketball. When you have that โฃcombinationโ and have him as an off-ball threat as well, I think it makes โour team special.”
Smith, whoโ welcomes theโข opportunity to operate โฃmore frequently offโ the ball, believes the adjustmentโ will also benefit the โคteam’s overall enduranceโค throughout theโ demanding Bigโ Ten โขseasonโฃ and intoโ the โNCAAโค tournament.
Mayer is focusedโค on refining his โขdecision-making and utilizing his physicality to drive to the basket more consistently. He also citedโ a humbling โexperience facing carsen Edwards, who scored nine 3-pointers against his maccabiโ Tel-aviv team lastโ April, as motivation to improve his defensive awareness.โค
“It โwas aโ shame,” Mayer said, recalling Edwards’ performance.
However, Edwards’ subsequent outreach played โa role inโ Mayer’s feeling of welcome at Purdue. Two months into his collegiate career โin the โฃUnited States, Mayer expressed immense satisfaction with his โขexperience.
“I โcan’t ask for a better place forโฃ this stage โขof โขmy career,” Mayerโ said. “To be โhonest, if leaving โฃprofessional experience aside, I don’tโค no I can โคenjoy basketball as much as I do right here.”
